Old Man
Re: Longest Running Thread EVER That's actually the experience I'm having with my current set of Yokohama Parada IIs. Admittedly I never have to drive on ice or snow, but they're pretty sticky and they're wearing very slowly. Much more slowly than the AVSIs I had a few years back, I think I scrubbed those off in less than a year. But man, did they hold the road. The tires on my pickup are just about shot; they don't grip anything. And (not being one who takes delight in vehicles for their own sake) spending money on tires is almost as exciting as chewing raw rolled oats. Uncooked, dry, without anything. Probably good for you, but there are other things I'd rather do. Bleah.

Cancer
Re: Longest Running Thread EVER ETA To Rep: is that from the start of the project or from this date? From date/time of last data point, which was about 3-4 hours ago. It's just a bonehead number out of a regression solution. EDIT: there's also at least one, and I think two, people on the monitor list who have not had their rep change since I started logging. Obviously, their time-to-ascension is infinite. I actually have Allan's e-mail somewhere from a boardgaming mailing list. Darwin has two gaming stores? Wow, luxury! We've only had one since Tactics sadly closed its doors a few years back, and like I said the remaining store doesn't do HERO. Nothing on that list of books for me, I'll just put an order through the HERO on-line store when I'm ready for my next purchase - I'm thinking about getting Champions and Terran Empire, maybe the Resource Kit too. Darwin has two gaming stores? Wow, luxury! Well, maybe one and a half. Comics NT has been around for 10+ years and it has a lot of old 2e D&D & misc rpgs/systems. Enchanted Worlds (Allan) also sells rpgs but the amount of space is not as much as Comic NT's (Allan's shop is smaller). Allan is probably the closest Darwin has of a specialist sci-fi/fantasy bookstore. Both stores are willing to order HERO from W&C as I'm sure your store is. zornwil
Re: Longest Running Thread EVER I wish Ben would alter the Rep boxs to compensate for the fact we have some insanely high rep now on the board. Nah, I think it's cool that people after some time end up in the same general "class". Egalitarian. And the count of rep is there, anyway, so there's an indicator, so it's not like that's lost, so the "rep game" remains valid. If we take rep seriously, beyond a certain point we can rest assured someone is generally deemed "interesting" or "credible" at a certain point and beyond that it's all the same. zornwil
Re: Longest Running Thread EVER Seconded. And the Rep titles too. A "Reputation beyond Repute" just doesn't mean anything. It means someone has been around long enough and made enough interesting or credible points that many people feel they are worth rep, and to a degree that is "a lot". Do we need to distinguish beyond that?
Cancer
Re: Longest Running Thread EVER There's something wrong in those ascension projections I put up a few days ago (about a page back). Not sure what at this point. When I have time, maybe tonight, I'll be able to turn my attention to it. Everyone in the 25-person sample now has changed rep at least once since data recording started. The last "unrepped" went up a point over the weekend. Still, the dynamic range in the numbers isn't great. The largest fractional increase in rep level over that time (early November) is a factor of 2.7, and only four have more than doubled. That is what's making it difficult to prove, one way or other, what I originally intended to demonstrate, that rep levels are increasing exponentially; at "early times" (that is, small increases) it is impossible to distinguish linear and exponential growth. Offhand, I would have guessed that one doubling time would have been enough, but too few people have had even one doubling in the ten weeks so far. Cancer
Re: Longest Running Thread EVER I wish Ben would alter the Rep boxs to compensate for the fact we have some insanely high rep now on the board. Perhaps ... simply altering the number the boxes to be 1 plus the integer part of the base 10 log of one's rep power, so each factor of 10 gets you another box. Assuming Dr A is at about 19000, he'd be at 5 boxes, and each successive box becomes exponentially more difficult to obtain. OTOH, Zornwil's comment about egalitarianism has some merit too. Though the log10 function would smash everyone down to 3 or boxes, giving the appearance of equality....
