Longest Running Thread EVER

Re: Longest Running Thread EVER

The kittens got fixed yesterday. Most unhappy yowlings, growlings, and hissings for much of the night. Two of the five were about back to normal this morning, but others still have a ways to go.

What seems to bother them most is that everyone smells like the vet. People are OK, once the kittens come off the sensory interference. The adult cats (who didn't make the trip) are no more objectionable than they were before. But each other ... oooh, they all smell like that scary place where bad stuff happened. We only got quiet after each of them had found a spot to sleep where they felt safe, which took a while, since ordinarily they sleep in a common puddle on the bed.

Of course, we didn't sleep well either.

Well, it's about 24 hours later, and 4 of the 5 kittens are back to sleeping together in a pile on the bed. The last one is under the covers next to my wife. So we're almost back to normal, and no yowling or growling.

Yay!

Apparently, getting fixed doesn't just make a cat smell like the vet; having no sex organs also changes the scent he or she emits. A friend of mine got two kittens for Christmas years ago; they were littermates, and clung to one another for support. But after their fixing operations, these sweet little puffballs started hissing at one another, and sweet little Pixel swatted at her brother angrily.

Eventually, they forgave one another and got over it, but meanwhile, my friend, the never-had-cats-before, from-a-long-line-of-dog-trainers sort of person, was at a loss. She wound up looking it up online and was quite reassured to learn this was normal.
