The cranky thread

Minor cranks. I had an alarm clock which served me well over the years going to work. Come back home an it worked until Monday when it stopped. Change batteries. Nothing. Alarm worked and light worked but no movement of the hands. Someone else went into it and just dead. To lose it after all this time just grates.

I brought a lot of glasses home that I had from different events like Great British Beer Festival and a couple of restaurant ones. I lose two. Hard Rock cafe special (you have their house cocktail in it) and one of the GBBF glasses (2010). The first was completely gone whilst the second had a break at the top which rendered it unusable.

Hot water heater didn't work this morning. No shower. And the gym here at the University is still "scholarship athletes only" supposedly while they expand it to come into compliance with Title IX requirements. I am a radical paranoid cynic and believe that's a BS smokescreen and the gym will be permanently that way until they siphon off enough operating funds from academics to buy the posh facility the athletic honchos really want.

Oh, and the Seattle Mariners, who IMO are the pinnacle of futility in US professional sports (a statement justified below), hired a new general manager, who is probably best characterized as a likable mediocrity.

In all of professional sports, only one team has not made it to the playoffs since the Mariners won the AL West in 2001. There's a good chance, should Rex Ryan lead the Buffalo Bills to a playoff berth, every team in the four major American sports will have played a postseason game since the Mariners last did—every single NBA team, NHL team, NFL team and Major League baseball team. All of them.

The Sonics have made the playoffs more recently than the Mariners.

There does not seem to be a simple way to search a folder with a bunch of .docx files for the document(s) whose content includes "some specific phrase". That's almost enough to make me start requiring that papers be submitted as plain text only.

Hmmmmm.

Meanwhile, I have been avoiding all discussion of Episode VII for months now because I want to avoid any and all possible spoilers.  One of my biggest problems with the prequel trilogy was that the trailers gave all of them away, so I'm trying not to have that happen again.  But I think it may be impossible when I can't even go into the Lego aisle of a Target without seeing more Star Wars stuff.  Seriously, the movie is getting spoiled by merchandise.
