The cranky thread

If you have to start over anyway, you might consider that mid-career change you've always dreamed of.  If you've been dreaming of one.  Easier said than done, I know, but maybe you don't have quite as much to lose now.

Yes but where does one apply for the position of assassin anyway?  :sneaky:

I have many careers that I wish I would have pursued when I was younger, but most of those have an upper age limit. An age limit that I have surpassed now. In truth, I thought I was going to be part of the company I was in because it seemed like job security was practically guaranteed. I expected that I would report to the cemetery after a shift at the very end. What I did not anticipate was a "corporate restructuring" and sell off of my division to another company. That one hit me out of the blue. Thankfully, I have some savings to fall back on so I am not in full-on panic mode yet. I've just been floundering with the new job search paradigm. I attended a workshop to help me get a handle on everything and it did help a little bit. Gah! Makes my head pound dealing with social media but apparently that is the way to go.

I got my grades in yesterday about 1PM, and I had my talk with one of the honchos about a new slot at the university, but I had no need to get up this morning, so I planned to sleep in.

When I did wake up, relaxed and ready for a lazy day, it was ... 5:45 AM, when my alarm usually goes off.

Sigh.

I watched the movie Twist today.  It's meant to be an Oliver Twist adaption set in modern day Toronto but it just uses the names and tosses out the rest for a drab depressing story about street hustlers.  Any charm the characters had in the original story was completely leeched out of them in this version.  Oliver's backstory is only barely touched upon,in a run on sentence near the beginning of the movie in what I presume was meant to be the sole moment of humor in the film.  Dodger, the main character in this version, is given some backstory.  He actually has a brother in this story, so his sexual assault by said brother can set up the climax of the film.

Nancy's death happens offscreen and has no emotional impact because we know next to nothing about this version of her.  Sikes death has even less impact because he's not even IN the movie.  He's mentioned but never seen.  Just a sad depressing piece of trash.  It's the Ultimatum of Oliver Twist adaptions.

Some asshole was smoking in the stairwell last night and set off the building alarms. 45 minutes of getting to know my neighbors outside while the fire department comes and shuts it down.

This was at 11pm

come in to work today to find the voicemail server is uncommunicative. Our efforts to reboot are stymied by the fact that it won't shut down. So we're coming in tomorrow to meet with service tech guy to back up the config and hard boot it.

Cloud-based server also being unreasonable since late yesterday - no reason for the behavior. And it stopped as mysteriously as it started.

I don't mind tough problems, I hate "Well it started working on its own."

And I get to wait for my new debit card to arrive (5-7 business days), seems that someone tried to buy stuff at an Irvine, CA Wal-Mart with the number. They apparently tried multiple small transactions at the same Wal-Mart, and were shut down on the third one.

Been there.  Annoying as heck.  Wal Mart and gas stations seem to be favorite places to try to use stolen card info.

So we have a senior day every week, where folks 50+ can participate in slot tournaments, get free coffee, and get gifts. The music in the casino switches to "oldies", which used to mean hearing stuff from the 50s through 70s, but had been getting a few songs from '80 or '81 recently*.

Until today. In a 30 minute period, I heard Madonna's "Papa Don't Preach" (1986), and Simple Minds' "Don't You (Forget About Me)" (1985). I'm now a little bit depressed that music from my high school days is starting to be considered "oldies"**.

*Which actually makes sense. It's very likely that someone who graduated from high school in '82 would now be age 50+.

**And yes, I'm going to be eligible for 50+ promotions in a few years. I guess that my mental image of myself still has me somewhere in my thirties.
