The cranky thread

I visited with my family in Nevada as sort of "Mom's not long for this world" sort of get together. I retrieved a bunch of my old property. Should have been a good day. Mom was happier than anybody has seen in a while. Sadly, my mother forgot who I was. She doesn't have any recollection of me at all. Even pictures of me as a child were met with "Who's boy is that?" kind of questions. It was depressing. Not unexpected due to the alzheimer's disease, but definitely not fun either. On the plus side, she didn't care. I held her hand for a long time and she hugged me as vigorously as any of the other kids. Still was a bittersweet day.

Then I returned to Sacramento where it is hot, muggy and stifling tonight. I HATE summer.

It jumped on my son Monday, my wife on Wednesday, and it jumped on me about 45 minutes ago: one of those stomach and intestinal bugs where you don't dare go more than 15 feet from a toilet. Assuming the same pattern, ... I know where I'll be for the next 48 hours.

Last night, my right leg started aching for no reason. Painkillers didn't relieve the pain, and my leg hurt so bad I couldn't sleep. The pain finally subsided a few hours ago, I was hurting for more than 12 hours.

As if that's not bad enough, my eye doctor found a small hole in my left retina. This can eventually lead to retinal separation if left untreated, so I have to see a specialist. I'm not sure if I can afford laser surgery if I need it.

Well, [expletive deleted].

I'm about to lay my head down to catch a few winks ahead of tonight's night shift, and one of the neighbors have decided to remodel. The sound of power drill in concrete is not a part of the recipe for good sleep.

My sympathies. Having worked odd shifts most of my life, I know exactly how you feel.
