Spring first proposed the idea in 2009, five years after its launch. “For a lower price, passengers should be able to get on a plane like catching a bus... no luggage consignment, no food, no water,” said the airline’s president Wang Zhenghua, at the time. Passengers would still require seat belts, he added, but more upright seating would allow the airline to increase capacity by around 40 per cent. “It’s just like bar stools,” he explained. “The safety belt is the most important thing. It will still be fastened around the waist.” A year later Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary also showed interest in “standing seats” and even expressed doubts that seatbelts were necessary.
