Among my hobbies back in high school was stage magic type tricks, and from somewhere I no longer remember I had a book of tricks by a stage magician who was famous in the 1920s.  One of his tricks was driving straight pins into his knee with a tack hammer.

 

As he explained in the book, it wasn't a trick.  There's a place in the thigh just above the knee where there there's a low density of nerve endings and small blood vessels, so you can drive a pin in there with minimal pain and very little blood, and if you're wearing a black tux on stage (which was his performance costume) it's impossible to see that anyway.  He recommended dipping the pin in alcohol before doing the drive-home.

 

This is not a trick I ever considered performing.
