Base Maps Question and Request

This is a general question for the powers that be and everyone here. Over time, I have noticed a great deal of debate and questions concerning maps. Whether there is going to be a book of them, what goes in them and such so the question is: Would it be alright for us to post the maps that we have made over the years in the free area. I have made a few to scale maps that I use (minor note: Just made a villain base map recently actually that my group is going through presently) and since they are made up completely or at least mostly would it be acceptable to post them? And also I would call upon anyone else that has made a map that would be handy to use to post it also. Mine are hand drawn on hex or graph paper and then scanned in as jpgs. I would, of couse, stipulate that these should be personal maps and not commercial of any form, gained, or taken from anyplace but the person's mind that drew them and posted them.

Re: Base Maps Question and Request

As long as the maps are your own creations -- not copies of maps appearing in Hero books (current or past), other companies' books, or the like -- we'd be glad to take submissions for the "Free Stuff" page. If we get enough of them, perhaps Ben can establish a separate page for maps.

Re: Base Maps Question and Request

I've got a number of maps I've done over the years as well. I personally avoid posting them to the boards because after a while such things tend to get lost as the thread ages. If there is a request for a specific type of map I might make an exception. I'm working on a download section of my web site where I can store resources like maps, which should make them more available.

Feel free to post whatever maps you have though. It might be just what someone need at the time. As long as your stuff if your own creation you can do whatever you like with it, which includes posting to a public forum. To start things off, I'll post the headquarters for the Defenders, the team of superheroes in one of my campaigns. It's nothing fancy, but it's a map. It's scaled to be printed onto 1/4" hex paper.

Re: Base Maps Question and Request

I too would like to see an area set aside for maps and base writeups. Villain and hero bases, safehouses, warehouses, pier locations, office buildings, etc...

Jak

Just thought I'd drop my interest here... seemed like a good place...

I second the motion. There should be a place to post Character Writeups. Not all of us have a website to post stuff on.

Re: Base Maps Question and Request

Hello Dust Raven, good Map dude.Do you have them available online?

Greedily yours

QM

Thanks! :D

None yet online, I'm still building it. Right now I'm working on getting the characters up. I'll be working on the downloads next, as I want a pdf of my house rules and world desc plus downloads for all the characters to be available as well as maps. That and I'd like to get a few more maps done.

I do wish there were a place on http://www.herogames.com to post this stuff. There is a Free Stuff section, but that's run completely by the site's webmasters (ie, the Herogames staff). I suppose it would be possible, as there is a way to submit powers for the online USPD.

Re: Base Maps Question and Request

I think part of the problem was I didn't scan at a high enough dpi. The first time I tried it they printed out fine but later when I redid the scans the dpi was set lower and I think that is the problem. I will try to rescan them and swap them out later. But here is something else.

Nice work on this one Shikarr... Really well done. I use to have TONS of maps, but a 'Unfortunate Mishap' destroyed all of my old gamming stuff... since the rebuilding I have only maped out 1 base... But I'm @ work right now so I can't post it... my Website has a bit of it if you like to see it.

Re: Base Maps Question and Request

Okay, I have another.

This one's actually a mansion modled after the floorplan of a local building. Makes a great "clubhouse" for superheroes though...

Also included is a gym, complete with mens and womens showers (and toilets for those of you from the Bathroom thread), a free weight room and a sauna.

Re: Base Maps Question and Request

Hi,

I usually make my maps in Powerpoint - it allows me to move objects around after they get hurled, moved through, etc. It seems like Powerpoint is not an acceptable format for this website, though. Anyone interested can e-mail me at home_n@hotmail.com. Here's what's available: a big zoo map, a casino riverboat map, a map of my house :), and a map of the Force Pacific team base.

Converting to JPEG seems to make the graphics less clear, but I could do that if any of you want it posted here.

Re: Base Maps Question and Request

Here is a link to our old Omega Team HQ. It is graciously hosted on Killer Shrike's sight. I built this using MicroStation (a CADD package) long ago and unforturnately I no longer have an electronic copy of the map (it was .dgn format anyway not a normal picture format).

I still have the original map and have taken a better digital picture than the one included in the write-up. However it is 508 Kb in size so I didn't attach it. If anybody wants a copy email me.

BTW, a lot of great maps here, thanks to everyone whose posted one.

Some more maps. These are from Synergy. Great maps that he made and has let me post here. They are a hero base, a River boat, and a house. There is another one but it seems to big to post I will see what I can do to make the file size smaller.

Re: Base Maps Question and Request

I have worked on a few maps (nothing quite ready to post yet). I typically use the drawing program included in OpenOffice.org, it allows you to export files to pdf, which are great for posting or sending to people who may not have the original program.

Re: Base Maps Question and Request

This is a great thread!

Being a lazy GM, myself, I tend to use maps I find online rather than draw them from scratch. Museums, libraries, and conference centers tend to have a mix of large and small rooms, and make terrific hero/villain bases. For example, here's a conference center that I think, with a few tweaks, would make a good hero base:

Evergreen Valley Library

Most museums have pamphlets at the door with a floorplan. If you have one in your area, you should grab a couple. There's nothing like trying to prevent a robbery when you have to be careful about collateral damage to priceless works of art.

The same applies to (a) shopping malls, and (B) hotels. I have a file folder full of maps from places like this; I always ask for one, in case I ever need to create something like that for a game. ;)

Another good source of maps (often with accompanying photos of the locations) is Architecture Magazine. The floor plans aren't complete (they showcase whatever it is the magazine finds interesting about a particular building), but you usually get at least a whole floor. Even more interestingly, I recall seeing ads in the magazine for books of "stock" floorplans organized by subject (hospitals, prisons, and so on). If memory serves, they weren't expensive, but I don't know if they're still available.
