Bazza
Q: what are the traditional hard sciences? I'm thinking astronomy, biology, chemistry, geology, & physics. Any more?
Cancer
I would put mathematics in there, and I'd need to think more about others. "Traditional" is a funny word in this context; how far back are you talking here?
Pariah
I would also include meteorology. And, of course, there are going to be areas of overlap. Biochemistry, for example.
Bazza
Cheers. Next related question: applied sciences, eg engineering. Any others?
Cancer
How do you classify medicine, and the considerable scientific effort that goes into that?
Bazza
In a sense that is applied biochemistry as I am led to believe that organic chemistry is a core unit of study. But under the medicine umbrella you also have fields like physiology. My aim* is to try to roughly organise existing academic fields under existing broad categories: eg: science, humanities, social science. I'll probably also add philosophy, liberal arts, and medicine as related or crossover categories. So far I'm interested in the hard sciences, and the related field of applied science. Re medicine category in second paragraph, I was thinking of putting science subjects that are personal, except for biology. So, physiology, psychology, neuroscience, nutrition/diet, physiotherapy, etc would be included here. * aim is to have broad categories to ask a question, that will be asked later in the I Challenge You thread. So broad categories will suffice.

Cancer
I've seen meat packages labeled as gluten-free also. A pity we can't buy stupid-free things. But in marketing there's no such thing.

Cancer
I have posted this link before, and I know you're dealing with a somewhat different population of students, but here. I personally contributed only a couple of those. Pariah
