WWYCD? #80: Future Hope or Hellspawn?

Your character is surprised one day by a cry of "Daddy/Mommy/Parental Unit! You're alive! I made it in time!" The speaker is an attractive and oddly familiar-looking young woman in a futuristic costume. She claims to be the character's daughter (adoptive daughter for characters who are incapable of having offspring.) According to her, she will be conceived in the next month or so from a reasonably plausible set of parents. Thanks to the character's upbringing of her, Future-Daughter has become a superhero in her own right. Unfortunately, she's made an enemy of a time-traveling villain, who she has learned came back to the past to prevent her from being born.

Just as her spiel is winding down, there's a shout of "Dad/Mom/Parental Unit! Get away from her, quick!" This person is a young man in a similar costume, also oddly familiar-looking. He claims to be the character's (adoptive if necessary) son, by a slightly less-plausible set of parents. He explains that there are two possible futures, in one of which the daughter is born, and becomes the worst tyrant the world has ever known, and one where he's born instead. And her world is invading his, so he came back to reduce the probability of her timeline, freeing his Earth from her conquest.

Both strangers have knowledge, genetic makeup, powers and skills compatible with being who they say they are. Neither mind can be read, as in both their futures, the menace of Menton or a similar villain made it necessary to install unbreakable mental shields (or so they claim.)

Each of the strangers will attempt to promote his/her own conception and prevent the other, in between attacks on each other.

So, how does your character handle this situation?

You don't know the can of worms time issues would cause in my campaign.

Almost unviversally, Audra Blue, Anthem, and Uncle Slam would confer with the rest of the Sentinels about what is going on. They've got at least three characters with knowledge of time issues.

I'd expect a visit by T.A.C.H.yO.N (a messenger from the future), ANACH (The Timeline Police), and possibly Eldritch (Mage with an ability to accurately predict the impact of decisions now on future timelines). And ya know what... The one that DIDN'T show up would be the one responsible for this fiasco.

There's also a member of the Sentinels who can detect lies.

Starguard -- At this point, Starguard is only 18, so meeting her kids would throw her for a loop. Call in Horus-Re.

Dr. Pain -- "... right. OK, you're both living with me until the villain gives himself or herself away by simply not being able to keep up the act forever. And since I'm your dad, even if your future did, you *are* living with me, got that?!?"

Baron von Darien -- "... children, kindly seat yourselves and explain precisely how it is that these sequence of events came to be, considering my current undead condition..."

Style - Time for some scrying.

Thirteen - Can detect lies from anything vaguely humanoid.

Indomitable Will - "Children! Make peace with one-another, and join me in the march of Social Pogress towards a Just Society!"

Flesh Gordon - "What, more kids? Well, there's some space at the mansion."

AnimeGai - An AI in a light bee with no real emotions. Would seek the advice of a human team mate.

Adonis - Listen kids, I'm not buying what you're selling. Even for a moment assuming one of you is telling the truth whichever one of you wanting to alter the time stream is being an idiot. This solution never works. As matter of fact, you are probably going to cause exactly what you are trying to prevent. So go home and deal with your present problems in the present, and leave history alone.

Husky will think "This is great!" and invite the 2 of them to go on patrol. The whole time he'd watch them both amd if either of them attempted to assault the other he'd cuff them on the head. Later after transforming back into Kenneth he'd bust out the Super Science and calculate the probablity of each of their described futures. If niether child reveals themselves to be the tyrant he'd duplicate himself and escort both of them home to see what's really going on.

Again' date=' if the character is incapable of having children (either due to physical or psychological limitations) the kids were adopted, either from a teammate or a close associate.[/quote']

I think there would be greater humor/embarassment value in Microman's case if they are actually his kids, mechanics left unelaborated. . .

( especially if one of the kids if a weird cyborg, and the other is an AI nanotech colony. . . )

The last character i played who was a time travler would have told them that he will have to secure them both under tight security until he could figure out which was telling the truth. If they resisted in the slightest he would kick the crap out of both of them just to be sure they where contained then lock them both up forcibly. He was sorta militant especially since he was charged with the task of defending his time line against temporal shift.

Special Agent Trent:

"What the...? With who? I bet SHE'D be surprised to hear that. Now, get out of my...

"Oh, great, another one. Who? I should be so lucky. Are you two it, or is anyone else going to be invading my...Hey! HEY! Not in my apartment! Oh, for--THAT'S IT!"

One psychokinetic brawl later...

"I don't think I'm getting the security deposit back."

Basically, the idea that Trent would be conceiving children any time in the near future will seem completely ridiculous to him, so he'll reject the idea that either of these kids are his. Even if they are, well, if they're going to go ripping through time, teleporting into his apartment in the middle of the night, and starting super-fights in his bedroom, they can solve their own frelling paradoxes. Darn supers; nothing but trouble.

Ghost Sniper-"Oh boy." She would ask for help from the team before she got any further. At the very least, she'd ask for help from Swen the Sometimes Seer. (Long, OLD joke...)

Warp: "Ok, which one of you has Tesserect as your Mom?"

"I do!"

"Ok, you're the bad one."

*Blast of High Pressure Water*

:)

Spectrum: "Obviosly, there's only one thing I can do to absolutely insure the future national security of the United States. I'm getting my tubes tied."

Mystic: "There's an easy way to settle this. I'll just cast a scrying spell and see what each of your futures are like."

Cobalt: Would favor the man's story. Other than he's a man (Cobalt isn't mysoginist, he's just Japanese), his story seems more likely (I know you said the circumstances of conception are less plausable, but in Cobalt's mind, that makes them more likely). In any case, his arrival and story doesn't match at all with what the woman said. Ultimately he'd probably decide that both are telling the truth (that Cobalt is the father of the daughter/tyrant and that the son is from an alternate earth and has come back to prevent the tyrant's birth). This will give him a head ache and he'll just send them to their rooms.

Vantage: "Oh yeah? Who's the parents? Yeah right! Now get lost and try your scam on more gullible heroes."

Zectron: "While I never planned on having children this soon, this is so exciting. We can fight crime together! Hey, let's patrol! What are your supernames? Oh, that can wait. It doesn't happen until the future right?"

Kristian Rolyat: "Okay, I give up. Where's the killer robot?"

Flippant: "You two KNOW there are parallel universes, right? That is the _source_ of my powers. You, daughter, will not cease to exist, but an other you is _destined_ to cease to exist. You, son. The tyrant will rule your timeline when you go back. Deal with it. If you like, stay here with me."

-this will take timefor him to realise, mind. He knows this stuff, but at first he'll be too busy trying to make sense of it all.

Sludge: Oh my. Teenage Villains are NOT good people to deal with this kind of problem. He is SO not going to understand/deal.

I have no other active PC's anymore. :weep:

All of you people taking the 'blow the kids away' option -- what the heck are your character's Psych Lims?

I can think of several members of the Authority who'd hesitate to blow away their own children, let alone any *hero* team member.

Re: WWYCD? #80: Future Hope or Hellspawn?

Special Agent Trent isn't going to simply "blow the kids away", but given that 1) they obviously aren't who they claim to be, 2) they have committed a crime by invading his home, and 3) they are starting a super-powered fight in his bedroom, he is going to use whatever force is necessary to deal with them.

The applicable Psych Lims, even if they're not listed on his sheet, are "Very Little Patience" and "Hates Supers Interfering With His Life".

The cruel irony is that his job is roving superteam liason/damage control. He can't wait until he can retire.

Well I don't think I'm included in this but in case I am, for me the Tesserect comment was in jest. And the High Pressure Water is an EB, so there's no permanent harm. Just knock the bad one out so she can be stopped from attacking the good one's mother.

Jack T. Chance: "Huh. Wanna a beer?"

Daniel Knight: Would be ready for the possibility that they both might be telling the truth. Time travel is tricky that way. He would separate them. If it is in his ability (and this cat oozed power by the end of it all) he would send them both back to their timelines. He would then have years of planning ahead of him with the ultimate goal of trying to stop both futures from coming to pass. Decades to plan contingency upon contingency plan. No one messes with his family.

Bane: Now Bane would believe both stories hands down. He is a powerful vampire (one of the world's top five most powerful people). He,also, has an adopted daughter, whom was the daughter of a teammate that fell during the liberation of England. But here is where the fun part is, Bane has an adopted son that is his old archenemy (that is actually a splinter of his soul that was totally corrupted by a Demon Lord and...well it gets complicated) that he had reverted to a baby to stop him from destoying the world. Bane is currently raising him as well. Bane would advise them that , although, he is overjoyed to see how his children have turned out, they both made a mistake in coming to the past. He will take both concerns under advisement and send them both home. He will not try to mess around with time.

Re: WWYCD? #80: Future Hope or Hellspawn?

Golden Eagle would explain to them that altering the past is impossible, using charts and graphs if needed. He would tell them that they come from "counterverses", pocket universes the size of our solar system, that split off in 1997. At one time, all counterverses had an equal opportunity to break through to join the one true timeline. But after the Counterverse Crisis, the Guardians chose this timeline to be integrated into the rest of the universe, while their timelines have turned in on themselves. In 100 years, they will grow further away from our integrated universe and no travel here will be possible. All the while he would be rearranging the circuits in his force field to create a portal to send them back.

Johnny Angel the teen combat precog from 1959, recognizes the daughter as teammate Barracuda's, and the son as teammate Stray Cat's (The gills or tail give them away). He smiles to know that sooner or later, he's going to do it with one or both of them. He would try to stop them from fighting, but they would likely continue until one of them was severely wounded or killed. He would then have the other or both thrown in jail. This is likely the event that sent JA in my game down the path to becoming Seraph, the Time Master, and creating the Counterverse Crisis.
