But now even Iron Maiden is easy listening and Metallica (the very benchmark of metal from '83 - '91) is pretty mainstream rock. Yes...The Kinks. Metal: You Really Got Me. Yes, Cream was a heavy band (for the time anyway). Not sure if the feedback/foldback from My Generation was influential in the creation of metal, but I'm sure it could claim to be a part (if does have the first mainstream bass solo).
