Re: Musings on Random Musings

Ok, this is a new one on me.

I woman tried to bring a puppy in a dog carrier into the library today. She claimed it was a service animal; it helps her with her cataracts. I frankly don't see how that's possible from within the carrier. But if they say it's a service animal, we have to let it come in.

Are "service animals" limited to being just dogs? And what's it supposed to do if it's not leading her via a harness? Bark once for stop, twice for turn left, thrice for turn right? Sheesh.

IMO they need to show a permit, just like to be allowed to park in a disabled parking space.

In fact, service animal users are supposed to have a special ID, issued by the school that provided the animal. My wife had one for every leader dog she's had, in case anyone asked. No one ever did, since her blindness is obvious, but she did have it.

Yeah, but unfortunately way too often it is morons who write the rules that Log is talking about. There may be requirements that people with service animals have IDs, but if the middle manager that wrote the policy decided that it is better to just take their word for it, that is what the policy is.

I used to word desktop support for a hospital. Quite a number of nurses discovered that if they used the magic words "This is a patient care issue" their trouble ticket would get bumped up in priority. There was no checking to make sure it really was a patient care issue, nor any way to follow up if it wasn't. So I would frequently get priority calls that would take me from working on a problem that stopped someone from being able to work at all, but wasn't a patient care issue, to go clear a paper jam from a printer for a nurse that considered walking an extra 10 feet to get to a different printer to be a "patient care issue". Particularly annoying since the reason all of the nurses stations had multiple printers was so that if one went down they would have a backup to use while it was being serviced.

I would report such issues to my boss, but as there weren't any rules in place lining out a punishment for incorrectly reporting an issue as a patient care issue, nothing could be done about it. Well, nothing short of writing another policy. Which is why at least state run hospitals have so many policies...

Ok' date=' I'm adding "This is a patient care issue" to my list of magic words, along with "It's a service animal" and "I'm delivering pizza." (I could get in [i']anywhere [/i]with that last phrase).

"I'm delivering a patient care pizza with my service animal."

That, or "We're on a Mission." :D

"She says that' date=' when she was young, she figured out that if she did 'the whole school thing' and went to university, she'd spend a third of her life preparing to work for the next third of her life, to set herself up with a pension for the next third of her life" -- Miranda Sawyer interviewing Lily Allen[/quote']

I love Lily Allen. Her songs are funneh.
