Re: Musings on Random Musings

I was thinking that last the more and more I heard about the woman you had to put up with.

Sympathies for the job loss, congrats at not having to put up with her anymore.

Yeah. I've had some pretty bad bosses, but the level of manipulation, nit-picking, and just plain making it clear she didn't like me and so that justified her getting me fired was more than I'd wish on my worst enemy. Granted, I don't play the office politics game very well, but that was just a disgusting way for an adult to behave. And she certainly hasn't earned any respect points with the co-worker I still talk to. (If nothing else, working at that location for that short time period allowed me to make a good friend out of the deal.)

Even better! They have cuter clothes. Additionally' date=' the best (only?) way for us to increase the gender diversity in these games is to make our own.[/quote']

Of course, genetically she will only be 1/2 gamer. Keri is very supportive of my gaming, but has no interest in it herself.

And very true on the clothes bit. We've got 'em pouring in from friends and family already. And Keri hasn't even had her baby shower yet. :)

You'll also want to stock up on burp cloths (i.e. clean rags), zinc-based diaper cream, and takeout menus from every decent eatery within ten miles. Also, if you're having a girl, you might consider using a spray bottle of water to clean up as well as wipes; the wipes can't reach all the way into every nook and cranny.

Is the gamer gene recessive or dominant?

We already have a large stock of clean rags, and our current plan is to use cloth diapers and a diaper service, so we in theory at least should have less of a diaper rash problem than if we used disposables. We'll already be exploring all of the eateries in the general area, as we're in the middle of a move right now. :)

As to the genetics, I'm still in the experimentation phase. ;)

You're moving and breeding at the same time? I did that last year. Exhausting. It gets better, though. Don't feel bad if you still haven't unpacked after a year and a half.

Yeah, doing them at the same time wasn't really the plan. But we found the place we are buying shortly after we got pregnant, and it was a good enough deal that we didn't want to pass it up. We should have more than 2 months between getting our keys and having the baby, so hopefully everything should be just fine. :)

Hope hope hope!

Also, breastfeeding is not automatic. There is a learning curve and there can be complications. Don't know if you were planning on it, but if so, you've been warned. Remember, you can always pump and bottle feed and get the same benefit. You're going to have to pump anyway.

Yup, and thanks for the warning. We already have a breastfeeding class scheduled. Kaiser really pushes breastfeeding for the health benefits to both the mother and the newborn, so they also have breastfeeding specialists that will do "hands on" training before mom and baby go home. And a pump and bottle are certainly necessary so that I can take care of some of the feedings. :)

I really need to get around to picking up a car seat fairly soon...

Hmm, OK, about 24 hours behind the times.

FWIW, my standard baby shower gift now is a dozen hand towels (or bar mops, they're basically the same thing) from Costco and a stuffed animal appropriate for some joke with the parents. Having spare wipecloths that you have in plenty, and you don't really care about them so just abandoning one in a trashbin is OK, is a real plus.

I'm an adult male' date=' just on the cusp of middle age, and I still get into heated discussions over comic books, role playing games, and other utterly trivial hobbies. I need to work on my emotional priorities.[/quote'] Why?

If those are the things you are doing why do you think they are "bad" or not the "accepted/expected" behaviour of a 'middle-aged' person. If you are happy, don't care what others think, for your happiness is the most important thing for you. Well that and love.

What you are is what is you are...

Don't look in the mirror and see

All those things you wish you could be

Just be in peace, be yourself.

addendum:

After reading the article linked to from this thread (The real reason Superman was created) this part caught my eye:

Michael Uslan, executive producer of the six Batman movies since 1989, including The Dark Knight, says there has been a "sea change" in how corporations view comic books and their creators. "Here you have people in their 80s and 90s seeing their comic-book work being taken seriously," Uslan says. "They are deriving economic benefits now either directly or through consultancies."
Jerry Robinson, who co-created The Joker in 1939 but who received little recognition for decades. (He's now a creative consultant for DC Comics in the wake of The Dark Knight film.)
I can't see why a middle aged man can't enjoy comics as a legitimate hobby. It is part of mainstream pop culture. Why still the stigma?

And I wonder what Jerry Robinson thought of Ledger's performance.
