WWYCD: The Gift Horse

Wormhole

Recommended Posts

You find a mysterious black aircraft has been left parked outside your base (if your group doesn't currently have a base, assume it was left at a location you frequently visit). An envelope bearing your name, or the name of one of your collegues, is taped to one of the landing gears. Inside, you find a typed note that reads:

The instruction manual is in the cockpit. Familiarize yourself with this craft and its systems, you will need them very soon.

–A Friend

Assuming you go inside for a look, there is indeed a seven-inch-thick black book sitting in the pilot's chair. Quickly leafing through the manual, there are sections in it for Flight Controls, Communication Systems and Sensors, Stealth Device, Weapon Systems, etc. If taken for a test flight, the plane's systems all seem to work as detailed in the manual, but you still have no clue who left it for you, or why. Do you look the gift horse in the mouth? WWYCD?

Microman: Suggests that he give the entire thing a very careful microsized examination. In addition, any onboard computer systems get queried in detail.

Decisions on whether its prudent to use said vehicle are up for those better suited for such decisions.

Diomedes: Investigates how the plane got where it did, using whatever resources are available ( eye-witnesses, security camera records, shipping manifests, the works ), with an eye towards any non-barking dogs.

Re: WWYCD: The Gift Horse

All my characters would treat it with due paranoia.

Anthem has no base, but some research and streetwise would get her. Upon finding it parked on the roof of her tenament, she'd contact the local heroes to haul it away. She doesn't even have a driver's license, let alone a pilot's.

Audra Blue would not allow it inside the base garage. She'd tell them that if the team wants it they'll have to pretty much dismantle it with an eye toward anything unusual and once she's satisfied with their findings they can bring it inside. She's expecting a trojan horse, of course.

Uncle Slam would take a team of PRIMUS scientists out to give it a looksee. Then he'd call in retired superhero Paragon, who is still an active pilot, to take 'er up. Once satisfied, PRIMUS would likely familiarize themselves with the technology and pillage it for anything that is exploitable in their own endeavors.

(I have too many characters...)

Silyione: A) Doesn't expect treachery so much, so would only inspect a bit. Would wonder how something 'a little out of it's time' ended up back here. Then would adapt er (space) pilot skills. [Assuming no interference by people with more paranoia ;)]

Tane: Doesn't exactly trust technology, or 'A Friend'. Left to his own devices, it goes straight to the Air Force... he won't ride in it, even if people keep it.

Rook: "Bribery is corruption! We must find a way to return it." (He's a little singleminded... :) )

Estatua: "I defer, of course, to the team leader... but this seems most unlikely to be a 'safe' gift..."

Flippant: "Cyber? Ah... already ordering it stripped down to spare parts and rebuilt? I thought so. Good luck."

Quasar The Boston Hero's League already has a Hoverjet. He'd have Mystica use Telekinisis to move the aircraft over to the ciry airport, far away from their HQ, but he'd also use his Speed Reading and Eidedic Memory to memorise the 7" thick instruction manual just in case.

Mystica What does a mystic with Megascale Teleportation need an aircraft for? She'd let Quasar worry about it.

Shadowhunter What does a street-level crimefighter need an aircraft for? He's go to a pay phone, call PRIMUS, offer a quick explanation, then scram before they could trace the call.

Style - "Jacob, could you come over and examine a plane for me? A plane. No, not an Astral Plane, it's some kind of jet. No, I did not buy a jet, someone left it here. When can you look at it?"

Flesh Gordon - "Hey! Free plane!" Takes off.

Legend - "Hmm. This is odd. Do any of us know anything about jets?"

Faye: Would wonder why anyone would give her an airplane - and how they got it onto the field at her high school. She'd definitely call up the airport to ask what they knew, and use her powers to discreetly checke it out for booby traps. After that, she'd try to figure out a way to put it to work - her family is nothing close to wealthy.

Starguard -- "... ummm, Horus, somebody left us a plane. I moved it outside in case it's going to blow up or anything."

Dr. Pain -- sells it on Ebay. ("WARNING: This plane may or may not have been a booby trap left by a supervillain and is being sold "As Is". Absolutely no warranty or liability is implied or will be assumed. Fly at your own risk.")

Baron von Darien -- moves. If somebody he doesn't know knows where his sanctum is, that's a sign he needs to pack his bags.

The Mask of Justice: Uses his abilities to give it a thorough going-over. Hopefully, there isn't too much plastic in the construction. Mind, given this is apparently a 21st Century aircraft in 1941, he'll have a devil of a time figuring out what is and isn't supposed to be a part of the plane. If he's satisfied it's 'safe', the Mask will turn it over to the US Government, who can make better use of it than he can.

Rock Bottom: "Cool!" He'll be especially impressed if the pilot seat is built for his weight. On the other hand, he's not sure what the city of Baltimore will need with one of these.

Calculus: Memorizes the owner's manual. Goes over the plane with Prototype to see if there's any traps, or technology worth ripping off. Will not fly the plane himself. Is, of course, very annoyed that people know where the secret base is.

Kira Midori: Not as impressed as some of the others, coming from the future and all. Will note if her precog picks up any danger.

Talion: Is thrilled that someone is finally giving him some respect. (If it's a trap, it's an expensive one, and therefore respectful.) Sadly, while Talion is still paying for his flying lessons, She-Cat sneaks the plane out of the hangar one night and totals the craft in a spectacular but non-fatal crash.

War Cry - "Saweeeeet! It aint nothing like the Zinthari starfighter I flew during the Tokaro Wars, but still" He'd casually toss the manual to the side "I'm an ace pilot, dammit. I don't need no stinking manual." Definately call up the team to see his cool new toy as he took it for a test flight and pushed it to its limits - and then he'd most likely crash it and pull himself out of the burning wreckage laughing like a maniac. "Holy @#$%! Didja see that? That was waaaaaaaaaay cool!"

Lucifer - He'd blow it up on the spot. Trust is not one of his better virtues - and he doesn't share either.

Re: WWYCD: The Gift Horse

Husky will immediately jump in and try it out without looking at the manual. If the plane doesn't fly intuitively he'll quickly become bored and change into Kenneth. Kenneth will immediately have the clarkebots build a small lab around the aircraft and take it apart micrometer by micrometer to see if it is in any way superior to his own Huskitonian technology (this is unlikely). He'll of course treat the vehicle with extreme paranoia.

Re: WWYCD: The Gift Horse

My character would trust the vehicle only as far as he could throw it. And seeing how he isn't all that strong, that wouldn't be very far. He would send someone else in to look at it, and take it for a spin. Only after using others to take a look at the vehicle would he feel safe to even enter the vehicle.
