History

George Lewis was born in January 1940. His early life was uneventful. He breezed through high school and got married to his (much younger) girlfriend Barb in 1961 while he was still in college.

George's specialty was always history and he became a history teacher. But he always looked at things a bit deeper than most, and he soon discovered that history as it was taught just didn't add up. The numbers didn't add up, the dates didn't add up. Something was just wrong. He researched the ancient world diligently and constantly. His wife was supportive, but really didn't care much for his work.

As time went by George developed a history much different than that taught in school. He (grudgingly) continued to teach the "accepted" historical facts right up until his recent retirement, but he now knows the TRUTH. Not only does he know the truth, he will also tell you all about it if you are willing to listen.

Motivation/Personality

At this point in his life George is motivated more by his love for his wife than he is by his research. He considers his research to be complete, and he has recently finished writing his first book and is shopping a publisher with little effect. But he is having trouble, since few publishers want to publish a book that claims that Christ was born in the late 990s (or the time we refer to as the late 990s). And when he begins to explain how the modern dating system was invented in the 1300s and wasn't common until a century later, and we simply blindly accepted the dates given by a single pair of 14th century historians, well, they usually show him to the door.

Appearance

George is slightly thinnish with greying brown hair and is in good shape for being 65 years old.

History

Barbara Jones' parents fled Italy during World War II and eventually made it to America, droping their original Italian last names, to this day Barb does not know her original family name. She was born in December 1944 and was married when she was only 16.

Barb never particularly had much interest in working. She worked off and on in the cafeteria at her husband's school, but mostly she just stayed home and took care of the children. She took towards carrying a shotgun almost everywhere after a close brush with a bear in 1975, and eventually came to enjoy a bit of hunting as well, and even convinced her husband to learn how to shoot (which he did, but he doesn't own a gun).

Motivation/Personality

All the children and grandchildren always loved Grandma Barb, but they were afraid of her at the same time. It was almost impossible to lie to her as she could get the truth out of anyone, or get anyone to do anything she wanted.

Appearance

Barb is of slight build and has hair that is prematurely white.

History

Vince Lewis was born in 1975. He was a fairly popular kid in school, having several girlfriends, and appearing in several of the school plays. He always dreamed of being an actor, and in 1995 he left home and moved to California to pursue an acting career.

Unfortunately he couldn't find much work. He went on audition after audition with little success. He finally got a (non-speaking) part as a nude protester in a film. He was only onscreen for a two seconds, and that was the only mainstream role he ever got. But one of the other bit players in that film was a small time porno director, and before Vince knew it he was the male star of hundreds of straight to video releases. He was known as "Steven Schlong" and was getting to be quite famous. He never really was comfortable with what he was doing, and he was sort of relieved when it all came crashing down.

It all came crashing down in 2002 when his mom (Barb) rented one of his movies. She was not aware of his "career" and was under the impression that he was a waiter.

She flew out to Calfornia the next day and pulled his naked butt right off the set of his latest "movie" and brought him back home. She never even let him speak. As soon as she made it home she cut his hair, and then drove him into town. They drove around for an hour until they saw a help wanted sign in front of "Tony's vending and repair". She marched him right in there, marche right up to Tony and informed him that her son would take the job, and there wouldn't be any arguements about it.

Motivation/Personality

Vince is in the process of finding himself now. He is very sensitive about his past, and hates being identified as "Steven Schlong". He is beginning to get comfortable with his position as a vending machine repairman, and is saving up to try and buy Tony out when he retires.

Vince hasn't had a real relationship with a woman since high school. And despite the fact he has slept with over 1000 women, he still doesn't quite know what to do about them. He also developed a rather healthy dose of homophobia from working in the porn industry.

Appearance

Vince is a nice looking guy of about 30 years old, he is in nearly perfect physical condition, and a lot of local women are interested.

History

Katherine Lewis is still in high school. She never really seems to think she fits in anywhere. In 8th grade she was all about archery, and even attended summer camp and spent every day there on the archery range (well except for the day she tried horse riding and fell off). She was quite successful as a runner on the track team in 9th grade, but by 10th grade she decided she was a Goth and a vampire and dropped both of those hobbies.

She has since recently dropped the whole "Goth" thing as well, although it was so recent that you barely see her brown roots under the black hair dye.

Motivation/Personality

Katherine is quiet, and doesn't think she is very important, and thus really wants to fit in. She hasn't really found her place yet. She doesn't have a lot of traditional skills, but she is very competent as a human being.

Appearance

Katherine is a short thinnish girl of around 16. She has cheek length hair that has been dyed an unnatural shade of black. She tends towards bland clothing, and likes to look down at the ground a lot.

Re: 25+25 Modern day horror characters

Very Cool! Just the kind of PCs a horror scenario needs.

My biggest comment is that this seems to be a much more combat-oriented group than I would normally expect. 3 of the 4 have Weapon Fams.

In my experience this tends to encourage characters to try to use weapons to win, which is usuall against Genre.

Re: 25+25 Modern day horror characters

Well you did notice I gave the weapon fams to the grandparents and the teenage girl, and NOT to the hunky lead male character. And only one of the 3 characters actually owns a weapon, and that is Grandma Barb.

I still plan on adding Katherines older brother (no weapon fam, but tech skills), and either her mother or father (no weapon fam there either).

Re: 25+25 Modern day horror characters

Weapon familiarities work well if you're doing a zombie oriented game' date=' it fits the genre well. And if you are doing a Lovecraftian game instead, it doesn't make any difference what weapon skills they have or what weapons they use :)[/quote']

I was trying to explain that to my favorite munchkin as he bounced combat based character after combat based character off of me, and I kept rejecting them.

Re: 25+25 Modern day horror characters

Cool. I think I may steal these for use as NPCs in my Zombie Hero game. All the players were built on 25+25 for that game as well. It made one of my regular players squeal pretty good when he found out how few points he had to spend. :snicker:

Hmmm... we need an evil grin smiley.

The Lovecraftian or Cthulhu Mythos genre is one of the few where I think Desolid as a defence against physical attacks is quite justified.

Of course, only Eldar Signs and other incredibly rare, often alien and sanity disturbing artifacts will ever have the advantage of "affects desolid"

Let them have combat characters, they'll be more hindrance than help - but every party needs a victim to slow them down and increase the levels of tension :)

I can well imagine the combat character charging in, getting horribly wounded, and spending the rest of the adventure being rescued.

Just let your munchkin bring in his combat monkey. When he finds he's totally useless in the first half-hour, smile nicely and say "I tried to warn you."
