Sociotard
http://www.eso.org/public/images/eso1436a/ Behold, a photograph of a protoplanetary disk. Note, this is not a simulation of a protoplanetary disk, nor an artists conception. This is a camera on a telescope, taking the picture. I am agog. L. L. Marcus
Well, it was taken by ALMA, which is a radio telescope network -- but it is awesome!
Cancer
If I'm interpreting things correctly, that disk is about 210 AU's in diameter.

BlueCloud2k2
How far away is it? We need to start beaming radio signals at it so they can come looking for us in about 3-5 billion years.
L. Marcus
According to the Wikipedia article, HL Tauri is 450 light years/140 parsecs away.

Cancer
ESA has confirmed that the Philae probe (ESA mission site) has landed on the comet roughly an hour ago, but not much eye candy from the event at this time. A pity we didn't have something like this happen. L. Marcus
tkdguy
Lots of space news today. Before the lander touched down, the Rosetta spacecraft captured the comet's "song." And here are some photos of the descent and ESA control room. Jupiter's Great Red Spot may only be skin-deep. It also is shrinking. Cassini measures the sea depth on Titan. Orion spacecraft is now on the launch pad. The test flight is scheduled for December. Virgin Galactic pilot talks about surviving the ordeal. Christopher
Before the lander touched down, the Rosetta spacecraft captured the comet's "song." And here are some photos of the descent and ESA control room. Yeah, they are still looking for a spot to land. Wich includes figuring stuff out like: Mass. Shape and consistency of the surface. Rotation. Times of activity. All the stuff you can figue out with a telecope for all the larger objects. For a dirty snowball comets are quite hard to figure out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELbEG1xPX9s
