Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group...

It's a shorthand for Hathor's 'portfolio' of fertility' date=' sensual pleasures, etc. (And it was cribbed from Col. O'Neil's description of the Goa'uld called Hathor in [i']Stargate[/i]. ;) )

I thought so. :)

Dr. Jackson: Hathor ... Egyptian goddess of medicine, fertility, music ...

Col. O'Neill: Sex, drugs, rock and roll?

Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group...

This Wednesday our group started its first game of the BUFFY RPG. My character is a Chicago detective who retired to this sleepy town near Lake Tahoe, California (unknowing that it became the next Hellmouth after Sunnydale was destroyed).

He sees a monster hunter chasing somebody who turns out to be a vampire. He gets involved in the fight and finds out that his 44 Magnum doesn't do much good against vamps. He's saved by a couple of supernaturally-powered monster hunters (other PCs) who tell him to leave their hunting grounds. No fool, my character complies.

Except that the other two characters later on end up in a fight between two OTHER PCs (the town Slayer and an expatriate Troll) and the GM decides that they're brawling it out right outside my house. So having learned from experience, I take my gun, lean out the window, and yell:

"Anybody who's immune to bullets, raise your hand!"

Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group...

We have a PC in a supers game called Sun Emperor, who's becoming a bit of a media hound. When he flies, he's enveloped in "flame". Last game, as he started to fly off, a 'fan' in a trenchcoat ran up, and flashed him, yelling "No Tan Lines!!!"

And they wonder why my character keeps refusing to attend the PR events or to pose for the group photos...

Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group...

It's our first session. Our characters, all previously normal people, wake to discover ourselves locked up with memories of having been experimented on and then forced to practice with powers that have been gained. We manage to escape our cells, make our way through the VIPER base (we soon discover), accidentally turn one of their scientists into Grond, keep out of his way while he goes rampaging through the base and then get out in all the confusion.

Once out we discover Grond is still rampaging and the police are waiting for the army so we go in to take him down ourselves. This we do nice and efficiently then leave before we are asked to pay for the building Grond ended up flying into.

Following this incident a government minister appears on TV regarding the incident and puts out a general request for super powered beings to come forward and become officially recognised superheroes; this being the UK that at the current time has only one. Not being entirely trusting we acquire a mobile from a guy in a pub and one of the characters makes the call while being driven around. He is talking to the minister who has just stated how impressed she was with the professional way we handled Grond when just at the moment there is a crash and a shout of 'Oh b*ll*cks' from the kitchen as one of the players has knocked over something.

Five minutes later when everyone has pulled themselves back together again the GM rules that it is this player's character who was driving the car and he has just run into the back of someone. To make it worse it is his wife's car. The rest of the phone conversation took place on foot.

Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group...

I must be crazy...this is the 2nd night in a row I've gamed to almost 4 a.m., and I've got to be up in 2 hours (2.5 if I'm 'generous' with myself), yet here I am, posting before I hit the sack...

All of these are from tonight's game...it was a very, ah, 'fertile' night for notable quotes. :)

"I told you -- it was like a roman candle...a really big roman candle. You know -- the kind they don't make!!"

"The only problem is -- do you know how hot it has to be to incubate one of these things?"

"Actually, you're really comforting for someone that made me pass out..."

Ex-Navy SEAL: "Just remember the old saying...once you pull the pin, Mr. Hand Grenade is no longer your friend."

Medic: "I'm not that fond of Mr. Hand Grenade right now..."

A fun one in a campaign of mine by a player's character (Doc Quantum) who's found his very own Lois Lane: "Ah, the intrepid and constantly underfoot Ms. Park. A bomb threat and a battle between superhumans, and the all clear not given...I thought you'd be here sooner."

"Great -- my own Phoenician-style cuneiform nightlight..."

"I thought it was my phone buzzing in my pocket, but I guess it must have been the Bible."

"Rain, there's a difference between waking him up and getting him up!"

"Didn't you get told that he's an egg that needs to hatch in his own time?"

"Yes -- but I can keep that egg warm, can't I?"

Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group...

In Saturday's game' date=' a couple members of the team are meeting with a high-ranking VIPER member, incognito, during a function being held at the Scarab Club in Milennium City. Sentinel, the team's power armor wearer, stations himself on a nearby rooftop "just in case" something goes wrong or VIPER gets any "funny ideas." It turns out that the VIPER member had the same idea, and there's a VIPER aircav agent [i']also[/i] stationed on the rooftop. After a bit of "strange cats sizing each other up" behaviors, Sentinel and the VIPER aircav agent come to the conclusion that (a) they're both there to do the same type of job and (B) there's nothing to be gained from starting a fight with the other guy just this moment.

Sentinel is also moderately infamous inside VIPER circles because, before he was piloting it, the suit of alien power armor he wears was in the hands of VIPER. He's the main reason it's not in their hands any more, and they really do not like him much.

So, after some uncomfortable silence, the VIPER aircav agent tries to strike up a conversation with Sentinel, and is rather unsubtle about making a bid to get him to "come back" to VIPER.

VIPER: "I really don't understand why you left VIPER in the first place. You put your life on the line every day, and for what? Public adoration? That and two bucks will get you a cup of coffee. The rewards for being a member of VIPER are much higher than veneration by the masses."

Sentinel: "I make $300,000 a year. How much are you pulling down?"

VIPER: (more silence) "There are a lot of perks for being part of VIPER, the sorts of things that, as a superhero, you just don't get to do. That's a much bigger incentive than mere money."

Sentinel: "One of my teammates is the avatar of the goddess of Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll. How do you think that compares to your perks?"

VIPER: (long pause) "I think we should keep our minds on the job were supposed to be doing up here." (lapses into silence)

----

(One of Sentinel's teammates, Scarab, is a multiformer and most of her alternate forms are based on one of the gods of the Egyptian pantheon. One of those forms is that of Hathor. :) )

LOL!!!

I just keep getting told I can't give you rep again yet!

Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group...

Okay, first adventure for my new group! Yay me!

The characters are as follows:

Sonic Boom - Energy Projector/Computer wiz kid

RedEye Knight - Aka Jake. He's basically a fire tanker from COH. His body is horribly scarred.

Gray Dove - Former sidekick with a bad rep for abandoning her mentor in the middle of a fight. Changed name but kept costume similar, it was easy to figure out for the public.

Anyway: VIPER is stealing something from Oracle Corp (a computer Hardware/chip maker style company) SB is something of a freelancer and works from home. He's coming in (on a holiday no less) to pick up some reports and then meet his girlfriend at the Detroit Day Parade (the campaign is starting in July of 2002. One of the VP's of the company is a viper espionage agent. She's been with them since the beginning.

VIPER hires Pulsar and Tachyon to keep an eye on things then the "standard" agent bungles the getaway and the heroes find themselves on the scene.

Tachyon and Pulsar are "incognito" Pulsar is wearing an overcoat and hat over his costume and to tell the truth stands out pretty good. Tachyon is wearing a t-shirt and jeans.

When Jake rushes out of the bar he was in to investigate he almost runs over Tachyon. Who grabs him and says:

"You might not want to head over there, things could get..." he pauses as he looks into the burnscarred face of Jake, "...ugly."

Jake smiles and says:

"Done"

Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group...

After a long weekend at Origins (a few years back), my wife and I returned home with a couple friends to enjoy a little Golden Age Champions. We were all a little slaphappy, so a few entertaining tidbits were sure to creep up.

My wife was new to the game, though she'd seen us play several times before. Upon seeing her character, she began to ask me about the things on the character sheet and I explained them in detail. Eventually, she started looking very intently at the sheet, even turning it over to look on the back for something...

Me: "What are you looking for?"

Wife: "Does my character have super vision?"

Me: "Nope."

Wife (without missing a beat): "Sweet! I'm unsupervised!"

Okay, a little narcissism here, though it was about two weeks ago. Over on Hero Central:

Other player: "Sir, tell me what happened and where it hurts... I will help you if I can."

My response: You get the distinctive feeling that the character isn't conscious; however, with your knowledge of biology, you think that if the bloody man could talk right now, he'd say something to the effect of "It hurts where the two bullet holes are."

Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group...

One of my players commenting about the lack of skills in the supergroup.

"We can break down walls and fight off Super Menaces but we get stopped cold by Westec security and window XP Passwords."

All of which has occured in the game.

Sadly, I can relate to this. Usually the characters are built for fighting or for one specific area and follow with "I hope the other PCs have useful skills."

Having stated this, in the only high-speed PBeM game I'm in (I'm a player in five, only one of which posts daily) my PC has 62 points in noncombat skills (34 in combat related), most of which deal with his job. Out of 5 KS's, not one is "Supers" or even an AK.

Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group...

In a 7th Seas game my wife was running, I was playing a Cap'n Nick, captain of the dread pirate ship The Skull and the Rose. We raided a Montaigne ship and were in the process of mopping up the defenders when my character saw a lovely Montaigne noblewoman carrying a chest and running towards one of the lifeboats.

Cap'n Nick leapt to intercept her, brandished his sword, and said, "Not so fast, my dear. I'd like to take a better look at your chest. Also, I want to see what's in that box."

Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group...

It is the start of a new Champions campaign. One of the players is determined that the superhero name he comes up with cannot be mocked in any way. As his character has the delusion that he is a Jedi a certain amount of mocking is inevitable and he is determined that it should not be added to. He has spent about 25 minutes on the phone discussing names that are mock-proof. The other players have been told his quest for a name that cannot be mocked so the challenge is on. He announces his hero name will be Vornar.

Two seconds later 'Vornar the Porn Star' had been created and the player was looking for a new name.
