Fascinating discussion of The Dark Knight here.

I'm glad he brought up the following point:

The punchline of the film is that the Joker’s game is a false dilemma. No one has to play. The only truly heroic moment in the film comes from an unnamed Tattooed Criminal (the scene stealing Tommy Tiny Lister), who, presented with the chance to save his own life by killing hundreds of people, throws the detonator out the window, with a disgusted look for anyone who would consider doing differently. Notably, the criminal’s noble act seems in NO WAY inspired by Batman.

When we saw that scene in the theater (opening weekend), me and the rest of the people I was with broke out into applause. I was surprised (and half-appalled) when the rest of the audience had no reaction whatsoever.

I love that scene. Tiny Lister is one of Hollywood's most under-rated actors.

Re: A Thread For Random Links

I think our destination is neither utopia nor dystopia nor status quo, but protopia. Protopia is a state that is better than today than yesterday, although it might be only a little better. Protopia is much much harder to visualize. Because a protopia contains as many new problems as new benefits, this complex interaction of working and broken is very hard to predict.
