More of a mixed bag than just about anything else the Beatles ever released, but there are several absolute gems in there. I think part of the problem is that they had lost the input of Brian Epstien and George Martin, the only men with enough credibility to tell them "no". So their nigh-unimaginable creativity ran riot, frequently in unfortunate directions. But as I said, there are gems, many of them unpolished. "Revolution" is a particular example of this -- a brilliant song presented in a raw, earthy form. Then there is John Lennon's heartfelt "Julia", a tribute to the mother who left him far too soon.
