I remembered this evening reading long ago that some pulsars have pulse frequencies which are in the regime where humans perceive rhythm easily, so I did the YouTube search thing. 

 

And, the presence of free electrons in space makes for interstellar dispersion, which means different frequencies of radio waves travel at very slightly different speeds, so depending on how you mix the radio frequencies to audio frequencies, you can get the oddly musical beats that you hear.  This is the first time I've listened to such a recording longer than a couple of seconds.

Murray Porath is a real person, an attorney friend of lyricist Frank Hayes. he apparently found the joke quite amusing and they remained friends.

 

The tune was written by the Founding Mother of the genre Leslie Fish. It was the tune to her song "Destroyer". It was Fish who wrote the classic Star Trek parody "Banned from Argo", which she has regretted ever since.
