WWYCD: The Invasion Is On...

Wormhole

Recommended Posts

A year ago, you had a run in with an alien scout who was sent to Earth to determine whether the planet was ripe for conquest. Said scout had a change of heart after getting *ahem* "intimately involved" with an Earther. He had since gone home to try and persaude the leadership to reconsider their plans to attack our world.

From the look on his face when he approaches you again after so long, it's clear he does not have good news. Despite his best efforts, the big wigs wouldn't listen to reason and the fleet's on the way--ETA about two weeks. He hands you a data crystal containing tactical data on the fleet--technical readouts on the the warships, logistical data, etc. After wishing you good luck, he informs you he came for one other purpose: to collect his sweetheart and take her somewhere he can be confident she'll be out of harm's way until it's all over. WWYCD?

Re: WWYCD: The Invasion Is On...

Millennium First, get the data crystal to The Proper Authorities. Second, ask the Scout if it would do any good for him or some other superhero to accompany the Scout back home. Millennium can probably disable one of their ships singlehandedly, and he's one of thousands of metahumans on Earth. Earth is no threat to them, maybe they want to pick a planet less likely to cost them as many ships and crew? If he says no or it does no good, if his sweetheart is willing to go with him, give his blessings.

Cheetah Wishes the scout good-bye and good luck, hope to see you again after the dust settles. Will take the data crystal, trade it to the government in exchange for combat pilot lessons on the fastes ting going to meet the invasion. His raw powers aren't that good for ship to ship combat, but 35 DEX and 12 SPD should make him a pretty good pilot.

Iron Will Copy the data crystal before turning it over to The Proper Authorities, see if he can work out some machine to disable the ships, if not will prepare a suggested attack plan.

Snow Leopard and Dolphin Hand the crystal over to The Proper Authorities, set up resistance/insurgency cells in case the first line of defense fails. Go to the matress, she in the Andies, he under the Pacific, on the projected date of the invasion.

Re: WWYCD: The Invasion Is On...

Assuming that Assault has some way of reading/copying the data, he will. Then he will pass it on to The Proper Authorities. And probably some Improper Authorities.

At this point, we have to consider which version of the character we are dealing with.

Gadgeteer Assault will start analysing the technical data. But that's a version of the character that only existed in a particular thread on these boards. But, through the powers of retro-continuity, it happened. The main version lost his super-intelligence after a little while. During this time, however, he realised that he didn't really didn't understand where his powers came from, and began the search that resulted in him contacting his Empyrean relatives...

Since Assault doesn't trust The Authorities, he would share copies of the data with any super-scientists he thinks he can trust, and would start making contact with all his various allies and less hostile opponents. He wouldn't go public unless/until absolutely necessary, to avoid creating panic.

Either way, Assault would be part of a network of serious people who would be prepared to try to deal with the situation as best as they could.

This is an odd situation, by the way. Usually alien invasions get stopped at the scouting level, or when the Invading Entity (or Entities) itself (themselves) is/are stopped. A whole alien armada is quite unusual. Tricky.

Assault might have to consider a "stop the leader" mission.

EDIT: I clarified some gibberish which tried to organise this (currently non-played) character's continuity. "Assault was really smart for a while, and then he wasn't, but he learned some stuff while he was, and there ya go". Which is better continuity than a lot of published characters suffer from.

I tend to agree with the "copy the data and turn it over to the proper authorities" response. In this case however, who are the proper authorities ? The entire planet is threatened with invasion ! "St Barbara" would make SEVERAL copies (if she could) and turn them over to the U N, various national governments, and any groups that she thought could play a part in defending the planet. She would then attempt to rally as many of the worlds metahumans as she could get access to and ask them to stand ready to take action, with or without sanction from any government !

This is Golden Eagle's bread and butter. He copies the data, and hands it over to the UN He quickly converts his factories over to build orbital defense droids, with an empty slot for the superweapon he and Team Eagle will develop to exploit the armada's weak spot...

Soulbarb throws up her hands and wonders 'why me, again?'; she's much more into mystical threats than aliens, despite the fact that she's had to deal with alien-related menaces in the past. She doesn't know any super-science types and there aren't any currently operating that she knows about in her home town. She'll make a number of copies and try to get them to anyone she thinks might be able to help, starting with PRIMUS, NASA (she lives in Houston), and maybe Imagine, if there seems to be any kind of interdimensional or temporal angle to things.

Starguard -- has no solo career, only her membership on the New Sentinels. Who, as their world's foremost hero team, will have no problem geting the chip to the proper authorities. (Our team leader actually paid the full price for "Contact: President of the US", for one thing.)

Dr. Pain -- has no contacts worth mentioning, but he knows people who do -- specifically, the Champions. Time for a quick trip to Homestead.

Baron von Darien -- is an in-the-shadows, secret-mystic-defender-of-mankind type. OTOH, he has contacts with Witchcraft through his membership in the Trismegistus, so, again, time to visit Homestead.

Re: WWYCD: The Invasion Is On...

Adamant:

Would sigh, say "Here we go again" and ask the scout why the alien armada thought they would do any better than the last group to attempt this. He would remind the scout of the 'Terran Ultimatum' following the defeat of the last group of invaders in 1984 (essentially 'come in Peace, or leave in Pieces'). Then he'd make sure to get the data crystal to the rest of the Global Guardians, and get ready to beat the heck out of invading aliens.

Chemo:

Would freak out, get the crystal to the Global Guardians or a representative of Checkmate (the United Nations para-military/law enforcement branch), and try to make sure his family was safe. Then he'd hunker down and get ready to fight the invaders once they get on the ground, assuming the Guardians don't wipe the floors with them...

The Analogist:

Would rapidly determine based on the evidence avaliable the most probably course of action for the alien armada, develop a half dozen viable strategies to deal with this invading force, and turn them over to the authorities of every nation on earth, the United Nations, Checkmate, and the Global Guardians via a replicating computer e-mail. Then he'd throw the billions of dollars he's got into developing methods of minimizing civilian loss of life and ensuring a swift victory against the (soon to be toast) aliens.

Singularity:

"Aliens? Fascinating, do you think they'd let me look at their stellar cartography database?"

Then he'd fight along with the others, if the aliens actually showed up. Probably with a very complex and highly detailed plan of attack, that might or might not survive the first contact with the enemy.

Re: WWYCD: The Invasion Is On...

Heh. Adamant's reaction makes me think about that 'Invasion!' parody Marvel did in Uncanny X-Men back around 'Fall of the Mutants'.

--------

Scene: Alien archivist is sitting in the file room of the Horde Invasion Fleet, which specializes in picking fights with soft targets.

(paraphrased from memory)

Archivist -- 'OK, computer, give me all references on 'Earth', yadda yadda.'

Computer -- 'Working. Earth, third planet of the Sol system. Tech level -- incapable of interstellar or interplanetary travel, general scale two with limited anomalies.'

Archivist *yawning* -- 'So, the usual pushover?'

Computer -- 'Negative. Anomaly: planet records an extremely high number of enhanced-power beings.'

Archivist (looks up) -- '... what?'

Computer -- 'Note: Planet is on record as successfully repelling multiple incursion attempts from the Kree, Skrull, Shi'ar, Badoon, Brood, Rigellians, and other major spacefaring powers.'

Archivist (spit-takes) -- "What?"

Computer -- 'Warning! Planet Earth is the only world known to successfully resist the World-Devourer, Galactus."

Archivist (jaw drops to the floor) -- "WHAT?!?!?"

Computer -- 'Warning! Planet Earth is the adoptive homeworld of the Phoenix."

Archivist (running around in a screaming panic) -- "OH MY GOD WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIE!"

--------

Sadly, the archivist was killed by the Horde commander for daring to approach his throne without proper respect for protocols, so the warning was never passed on, the Horde invaded anyway, and got their butts kicked by four X-Men who were out on a pub crawl, plus some random passing Aussies. :)

Jessica

"I wonder if they taste good." Would wait for the invansion and start eating things.

Silence

Mixed feelings here, everything dies. She would relegate to a protection role instead of an active offensive role, especially she will never ever kill anyone or anything.

Re: WWYCD: The Invasion Is On...

I'd have to tweak this to the current campiagn, naturally...

Sentinels team member, Thok, is an alien who was originally a scout but who refused to give up the humans and Earth, and thus was banished. So he sorta fits here (except that there's no chance he and any human will be getting "friendly").

If this information about the pending arrival of the aliens was brought to Anthem or Audra Blue, either one are going to turn to the Sentinels to line up defenses. Uncle Slam is going to dig into the old Cold War files regarding multiple alien invasions that were fought in secrecy and update those plans before deploying PRIMUS. He'd also bring the heroes in on it.

In the case of the heroes, I'd consider sending them out to pre-empt some of this.

In fact, there's a plotline already in waiting regarding this info.

Re: WWYCD: The Invasion Is On...

Hornet--turn info over to authorities, and start working on the nastiest set of defenses he can cook up--not holding back for fear of his technology going astray for once.

Blaze would push for a pre-emtive strike..being able to get to the aliens first, and bring a lot of others with him. Sort of Like Iuz's Ultimatum, yet with promised retaliation upon the homeworld of the offending party.

Ranger--Easy to inform the authroities. Not the starship masher, he wouldn't mind some commando operations.

Schaister--immediately print a few million. "I survived another alien invashion and all I got was this lousy shirt" T shirts. Finds someone to go into the debris salvage buisness.

And, being the greatest con artist of all time, yet still sentimental about earth....manages to approach the aliens as the earhtling who, cowed by the aliens superiority, tells of the secret human attack plan that actually leaves the aliens in a bad position for the inevitable desperate assault of the heroes. Milks being a 'world saving hero" for all the money its worth.

Crown Princess Cyrande of Malva- "And why do the fools come here again? Be it so, they shall break easily enough." Gives the info to Horus, then using her knowledge of galatic races, gets Earth the help of their enemies.

Nox- Passes the information up, fast. If the aliens do land, Nox plays support, given she's a very good teleporter and can slip in and out of nearly anywhere.

Re: WWYCD: The Invasion Is On...

If the thread from a couple of years back (the one with Galzorn the Conqueror)

is any indication, most of the world's heroes would probably subject the alien

invaders to relentless mockery before Q.U.A.R.K. hit them with the Deadly

Chaos Virus (AKA America Online starter software), which would immediately

wreak havoc with the invaders' computer network.

Microman II: The "Don't you realize what happened to the last couple invasions?" thought occurs to him too. Otherwise, he probably focuses on nanohacking the incoming ships, preferably the flagship.

Diomedes: Is in over his head, passes the data along to PRIMUS and tries to get Aegis ready for the invasion.

Queen of Spades will attempt to copy the data and spread it around. You get the idea. The Forge might be useful to create difficult-to-make devices en masse, but she'll have a supergroup be her proxy to ensure privacy of the device.

Other than that, she'll stick to being ground support--they may not be able to withstand an energy mace to the head.

Re: WWYCD: The Invasion Is On...

If the scout had come 20-25 years ago, rather than one, this would essentially be Badger's origin. His father was an alien from a warlike species who had come to Earth, had a couple of kids with an Earth woman, then disappeared without a trace when Badger was only 5 or 6. He has uh...issues about that.

Badger: Hey dad, so you wanna see Mom?......Well she's dead and sis is too. Get the **** out of here.

Though he might eventually calm down. And knowing the race's rep (Badger has read up on some things about his father's culture, some info that his father left behind, not to mention that his physiology which is the source of his powers) that this is going to be a big time battle. Hard fought, bare-knucle drag-out. So any and everyone will be needed. And differences would have to be put aside. Badger would even be forced to call a truce (damn it) with his arch-nemesis (among many other things the guy responsible for the rest of the family's death).

Course if this is not the father, then Badger would probably keep his level head. Get the info to any and everyone needed in defending. And would care less what the scout did or didnt do involving the Earther he wanted to take back, there are bigger things to worry about at the moment.

Re: WWYCD: The Invasion Is On...

Prof. Genesis: Relay the invasion information to the world governments and the superhero comunity. Then, using his knowledge of alien technology, (which probably is not compatable with the invading races tech) try to develop a computer virus to stop the invading fleet. He will also ask some appropiate hero for a ride to the command center or computer core of a major ship in the hopes of capturing it whole, so he can study it, and use it later.

With all these alien invaders coming to Earth and their stuff getting captured, and all these super scientists around, Why is Earth not part of the galactic community yet?

Peregrine (same campaign as Nox): Copy the data to his own lab, and then take the crystal to his U.S. government contact - Chicago SA Darin Falswell. (Well, he's technically a rival - but when the chips are down, the rivalry goes on the shelf. This counts.)

Good question. I think it's because they aren't philosphically ready--they're still an immature species, not yet ready to take the step into the Sea of Stars as one, unified race.

Which is, frankly, something that irks me about alot of such stories.

If the tech base is there to make it unnecessary, why *should* a planet have to unite under one government before it can interact with other species?? Does everyone else in the universe value conformity over all else, or think that species is some inherently meaningful divider for laying out political establishments??

Actually, it's probably to keep interstellar wars being fought by proxy on the surfaces of 'developing worlds'.

Consider the ramifications if, oh, the US signs a formal diplomatic alliance with the Perseids, but China decides to accept vassal state status under the Varanyi, and some terrorist nation somewhere sells out to the Ackalians...

That is a nice scene, and as i read and enjoyed invasion ( even having to buy a ripped copy of the 3rd ) would have looked good in there.

Could be. But I tend to think that in real life, when the aliens do come, if they attack Earth, they will find Earth pretty quickly united. Given the history of man, we seem to have a need to be at war with SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE, but we also pull together if any one power gets too agressive. IRL, our 'racist' tendencies will pale compared to the oportunity to kick around a whole other species. Of course, if the aliens come and offer advances, then one country will try to monopolize all the goodies for as long as they can to gain power over the other Earth powers.

I would (and am) extend this to a Champions Universe too. There are just too many good stories that come out of multiple alien contacts and the race by various political bodies to be the first to reap the rewards of having galactic trading partners.

I don't think maturity will have anything to do with mans leap in to a Galactic Community. It will be fueled by the same thing that launched almost every other voyage into uncharted territory in mans history, greed.

Probably the same reason multinational corporations are reluctant to make large capital investments in countries with ongoing civil wars. I could see the other members of the Galactic League valuing not conformity, but stability, the knowledge that if you start negotiations with someone, they will still have the authority to negotiate next week.

I would think a planet is an inherently meaningful divider for laying out political establishments.
