I received permission at our local public library to graze the Adult stacks when I was 8 years old. I had rapidly outgrown the Children's section in several subjects. Some of my favorite books were related to cryptography, chess, and stage magic (an illustrated book that described Houdini's illusions was amazing).

:think:  I don't think anyone ever tried to restrict where I browsed in a library.  Teachers and librarians would start me in different places, but after satisfying myself that I wasn't finding anything I wanted, I went where I wanted.

It was Central Florida in the 1970s. There were little signs on the adult stacks that marked them as off limits to children, and I was apparently reported on a couple of occasions to the librarians for "being out of my section" by adult patrons.
