That old joke has been around so long that when someone used a broken CD drive as an actual cupholder, he couldn't convince the tech that it wasn't that old joke in action. Given how physical media is being slowly phased out (until we hit crystal technology, anyhow), I wouldn't be surprised if we eventually return to a point where new PC users truly do mistake CD-ROM drives for cup holders.
