Free online Champs adventures

Recommended Posts

We all know what a creative and imaginative bunch us HERO gamers are, able to come up with great adventure plots at the drop of a hat. ;) Well, okay, sometimes we need something like a "plot seed" to get the design juices flowing. Occasionally, though, we run a little dry creatively, or we're pressed for time, and would really appreciate a more detailed, structured adventure that could be run more or less as is, or with minimal tweaking to fit our campaigns.

In my Internet peregrinations I've run across a few such adventures put up by our fellow HERO players for free use. I thought it might be helpful for those of us who have created or discovered such things to compile them in one place for easy reference. I'm starting off with Champions adventures because there seem to be more of them than for any other HERO genre.

I'll begin with this fine general campaign-starting adventure by our own Hermit, "Goodbye, Mr. Liberty," posted here to the discussion boards:

http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?p=139734

Issue #3 of the grand old Hero Games magazine, Adventurers Club, featured an excellent "dungeon crawl" type Champions adventure, "What Rough Beast." Patric L. Rogers has updated the adventure to Fourth Edition HERO System on his combined Champions/ Villains & Vigilantes website, Morpheus Unbound, with full game stats, detailed maps, and illustrations. The background for the adventure uses the villainous organization Genocide, but only indirectly - it's very easy to substitute some other org. Here's the adventure:

Perhaps the best example of true horror in a supers RPG is Allen Varney's brilliantly disturbing "Horror World," part of the classic 4E supplement Champions In 3-D. Allen has put up the entire text of the adventure/setting, retitled "Anopheles: Atrocities From Beyond," on his personal website (lots of other neat stuff there btw). Here's where you can read "Anopheles":

http://www.allenvarney.com/anopheles.html

Our illustrious boardmate Bob Greenwade also maintains a fine personal website, Bob's Original Hero Stuff Page. Among his treasures are six original, well-written Champs adventures. These are all based on the "official" Champs Universe pre-Fifth Edition, but would not be difficult to modify to fit similar characters or groups to the ones used. For people using the 5E CU, the adventures featuring Dr. Yin Wu, and conflict between VIPER and COIL, could be run almost as they are. You'll find them here:

Well, that's a start. Any other contributions would be welcome. :)

For fans of Aaron Allston's "the Blood," as detailed 'way back in Organizations Book III: The Blood and Dr. McQuark, Adrian Ownby crafted "Blood Rites," an original adventure based on that material. It features 4E writeups for new Blood characters, based on Aaron's background and examples.

It was originally posted to the grand old "Red October" HERO BBS, the archives of which are now hosted on Shelley Chrystal Mactyre's excellent website. To download it, go to http://www.mactyre.net/october/HEROGEN/Files.html , and click on BLOOD2.ZIP.

It's also well worth sorting through the rest of the Red October archives. Years of creativity by the whole HERO community lies therein.

Found another one

To Stand Together is a nice little generic adventure that's easy to drop into any campaign with mystical elements, and useful as an introductory adventure for a new campaign.

The adventure includes character stats for HERO and the Witchcraft RPG, plus downloadable maps and illustrations (under the "Download this adventure" link).

Re: Free online Champs adventures

I was wondering...Is anyone doing free adventures for Hero System 5th Edition? Why is it all 4th?

Because 4th edition was current at the time they were written. Most of them were written and/or relased during the post ICEage "bad times".

Here in the 5th edition era we have been blessed by a publisher who has kept the new material coming out in a nice consistant manner. Plus you have Digital Hero, which frequently has adventures in it. Thess are a good things, but they also mean that there is currently less incentive for folks to create and release to the web original adventures of their own.

Well, our own Sketchpad has provided us with a fine free adventure of his creation statted for Fifth Edition, "New Year's Eden," featuring an original supervillain: http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40107 . To download it, scroll down the thread to Post #11, where Sketchpad has Attached the PDF file.

I probably should mention that I do not currently have access to that site to update it (or I'd be taking some stuff down, adapting other stuff to 5E, and adding still others).

A pity. I really liked the Justifiers super team based in Portland and was rather hoping for a 5Ed.R "face lift" as it were with them.

I only own the IP on Rattler and Ms. Steele anyway, but I may yet send them in (along with a few other supers from my stable) as a DH entry some time along with something similar to the Oregon Hero Sanction plan.

Yeah, the hero sanction idea made perfect sense. I been trying to adapt something like it for N.Y.

Thank you for posting the link for "What Rough Beast"! My brother was going to be introducing the beast to our newer generation of players that never went through it the first time. Us older players already went through it once and get to groan again when we meet it... again. Although he has AC #3, it's easier to print it out and look at it that way.
