That's why I giggled at "Theatre of Blood". The American Price is playing the large ham British stage actor, while all the critic-victims were actually played by British actors who got their fame via theatre. :eg:

Really? Wasn't the very unEnglish accent a bit of a give away?

 

To the English perhaps. Americans often didn't notice the subtle differences the English would catch onto right away.

 

Mary Poppins was controversial among the acting community in Britain because American Dick van Dyke, playing the role of Bert, was murdering the Cockney dialect and the directors didn't seem to care. (He also had a smaller role as an upper-class banker and murdered that accent as well.)
