Build Challenge: bystander-identification glasses

Recommended Posts

Imagine a veteran superhero (M1-Abrams?) giving an orientation speech to the new heroes:

"Before we use any super-powers, let's take a moment to talk about the safety of innocent bystanders. Be sure to read, understand, and follow all the safety rules that come with your super-powers. Knowing how to use your super-powers properly will greatly reduce the risk of bystander injury. And remember this — there is no more important safety rule than to wear these — bystander-identification glasses."

  1. Got a better idea for a name that fits the speech? POST it!
  2. Got an idea how to build it in HERO terms. POST it!

btw, here's the original for those who aren't familiar with TNYW:

"Before we use any power tools, let's take a moment to talk about shop safety. Be sure to read, understand, and follow all the safety rules that come with your power tools. Knowing how to use your power tools properly will greatly reduce the risk of personal injury. And remember this — there is no more important safety rule than to wear these — safety glasses."

Re: Build Challenge: bystander-identification glasses

The trick is, how do they identify bystanders? I could see detect superpowers, but that wouldn't identify most henchmen, not to mention martial artists.

perhaps detecting intent to do harm? that sounds like the best bet.

I'd really hate to see some "detect number of character points" thing. That ruins the versimilitude. Unless you like doing things Order of the Stick style.

I agree it shouldn't be so all encompassing as just character points. However, "powers of biological/inherent nature of X power level (say largest active point power)" wouldn't be so bad. Kinda like the scanner thingy's used by the bad guys in DBZ.

Re: Build Challenge: bystander-identification glasses

Detect Invidual Threat (passive, Sight Group), Discriminatory, Analyse. OAF (-1).

The goggles detect body-language and vital signs of everything in their field of view. A microcomputer processes and analyses this information, comparing it to statistically proven indications of personal involvment and intent to harm. The final results are visible on a heads up display built into the goggles with confirmed threats highlighted in red, possible threats outlined in yellow, and confirmed (within a 10% margin for error) bystandars (those not voluntarily interacting in a conflict involving the surrounding group) are outlined in green.

Most possible threats are actually bystandars but are involved in the group conflict in some way. They may be resisting efforts to move them to saftey or defying an agressor, or may have a connection with a threat involved in the conflict (the mother of the child currently being used as a human shield would likely be outlined in yellow, while the child would be outlined in green unless he was struggling with his assailiant).

Special note: The goggles cannot differentiate between "sides" of any conflict and can only detect the level of involvement of any individual. Confirmed threats would include all active criminals as well as law enforcement personell and your own teammates.

While this is more of a detect bystandard by detecting everything that isn't and eliminating it, it gets the job done.

Oh. How about Analyze: Bystanderishness with an OIF? Probably less points....

We want to be specific, though, so that supervillains can outwit it. Not to mention the superheroes in disguise.

That's what Stealth, Shadowing, and Disguise skills are for (maybe Acting, too). We've just stepped into the land of Skill vs. Skill rolls, even in a supers game. Congratulations! :celebrate:

How about natural "misfires"? The glasses work by looking for people who are watching what's going on, but miss the mentalist who is looking in the other direction
