Judging The Strength of Challenges/Encounters?

I know their are many system to give a quick evaluation of the combat potential of antagonist vs PC's. However I have't found any exact formula. So may querry is how do you guys judge a challenge for you characters?

Is the person that designed that page color blind? It might be the greatest thing ever, but Ill never know because it gives me a splitting headache to look at it. ;)

I always start my new pc's against a horde of small bad guys to gauge combat efectivness.

 

40 gobbos for a fantasy campaign, 40 150 point ninja for supers, then build up the surly level of the bad guys 'til they get their bum kicked. It works for me.
