Re: Make Your Own Motivational Poster

SOS = Save Our Souls.

SOS, a simple easy to memorize morse telegraph message, distinctive: ...---... Three short, three long, three short. Easy for even the untrained to signal.

(Mayday is a American mispronunciation of a French phrase that means "help me!" Also distinctive, easily recognized, and memorize)

cheers.

When i was growing up I was always told that SOS was Save Our Souls. Since you are in the Navy I assume you have much experience (hopefully none in using SOS) more accurate information than us lay-people. :)

I was a Navy signalman, and had to memorize all the morse code shorthand. In addition, my instructors (and later the Chiefs and LPOs) would 'make training fun' by including trivia as part of the training. Distress calls are always simple, easy to memorize, easy to repeat, easy to recognize. Because there are few things worse than saying "I need assistance" and having the answer come back "What did you say?"

So, SOS, Mayday, November Charlie, one red parachute flare, multiple (3+) red flares, visible flames, black square over black circle (orange backround optional), waved arms, orange smoke, single gunshots at one minute interval, continous sound of fog signal, emergency radio signal beacon, dye marker, white strobe light, a square flag over a ball...

(oh, lord, I am a internet know it all, won't someone please help?)

Roger Murdock: Flight 2-0-9'er, you are cleared for take-off.

Captain Oveur: Roger!

Roger Murdock: Huh?

Tower voice: L.A. departure frequency, 123 point 9'er.

Captain Oveur: Roger!

Roger Murdock: Huh?

Victor Basta: Request vector, over.

Captain Oveur: What?

Tower voice: Flight 2-0-9'er cleared for vector 324.

Roger Murdock: We have clearance, Clarence.

Captain Oveur: Roger, Roger. What's our vector, Victor?

Tower voice: Tower's radio clearance, over!

Captain Oveur: That's Clarence Oveur. Over.

Tower voice: Over.

Captain Oveur: Roger.

Roger Murdock: Huh?

Tower voice: Roger, over!

Roger Murdock: What?

Captain Oveur: Huh?

Victor Basta: Who?

It's true some people play fast and lose with spelling, but don't loose your cool over it.

They're just loosers.
