Lawyers, Guns and Money

(Warren Zevon)

Well, I went home with the waitress

The way I always do

How was I to know

She was with the Russians, too

I was gambling in Havana

I took a little risk

Send lawyers, guns and money

Dad, get me out of this

I'm the innocent bystander

Somehow I got stuck

Between the rock and the hard place

And I'm down on my luck

And I'm down on my luck

And I'm down on my luck

Now I'm hiding in Honduras

I'm a desperate man

Send lawyers, guns and money

The shit has hit the fan

Jungle Work

(Jorge Calderon and Warren Zevon)

Lear jet S.W.A.T team

On a midnight run

With the M16

And the Ingram gun

We parachute in

We parachute out

"Death from above"

We're screaming now

Where the pay is good

And the risk is high

It's understood

We'll do or die

Sten gun in hand

Where the gun is law

From Ovamboland

To Nicaragua

Strength and muscle and jungle work

Three young men

In a Russian truck

With a little MAC-10

Sent 'em running to the huts

These few young men

The few who dare

To battle in hell

Le Mercenaire!

Strength and muscle and jungle work

Werewolves of London

(LeRoy P. Marinell, Waddy Wachtel and Warren Zevon)

I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand

Walking through the streets of Soho in the rain

He was looking for the place called Lee Ho Fook's

Going to get a big dish of beef chow mein

Werewolves of London

If you hear him howling around your kitchen door

Better not let him in

Little old lady got mutilated late last night

Werewolves of London again

Werewolves of London

He's the hairy handed gent who ran amuck in Kent

Lately he's been overheard in Mayfair

Better stay away from him

He'll rip your lungs out, Jim

I'd like to meet his tailor

Werewolves of London

Well, I saw Lon Chaney walking with the Queen

Doing the werewolves of London

I saw Lon Chaney, Jr. walking with the Queen

Doing the werewolves of London

I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's

His hair was perfect

Werewolves of London again

Draw blood

Re: Susano's Song-Based DC NPCs

Here's one with plenty of fodder!

Mr. Bad Example

(Warren Zevon & Jorge Calderon)

I started as an alter boy, working at the church

Learning all my holy moves, doing some research

Which led me to a cash box, labeled "Children's Fund"

I'd leave the change, and tuck the bills inside my cummerbund

I got a part-time job at my father's carpet store

Laying tackless stripping, and housewives by the score

I loaded up their furniture, and took it to Spokane

And auctioned off every last naugahyde divan

I'm very well aquainted with the seven deadly sins

I keep a busy schedule trying to fit them in

I'm proud to be a glutton, and I don't have time for sloth

I'm greedy, and I'm angry, and I don't care who I cross

I'm Mr. Bad Example, intruder in the dirt

I like to have a good time, and I don't care who gets hurt

I'm Mr. Bad Example, take a look at me

I'll live to be a hundred, and go down in infamy

Of course I went to law school and took a law degree

And counseled all my clients to plead insanity

Then worked in hair replacement, swindling the bald

Where very few are chosen, and fewer still are called

Then on to Monte Carlo to play chemin de fer

I threw away the fortune I made transplanting hair

I put my last few francs down on a prostitute

Who took me up to her room to perform the flag salute

Whereupon I stole her passport and her wig

And headed for the airport and the midnight flight, you dig?

And fourteen hours later I was down in Adelaide

Looking through the want ads sipping Fosters in the shade

I opened up an agency somewhere down the line

To hire aboriginals to work the opal mines

But I attached their wages and took a whopping cut

And whisked away their workman's comp and pauperized the lot

I'm Mr. Bad Example, intruder in the dirt

I like to have a good time, and I don't care who gets hurt

I'm Mr. Bad Example, take a look at me

I'll live to be a hundred and go down in infamy

I bought a first class ticket on Malaysian Air

And landed in Sri Lanka none the worse for wear

I'm thinking of retiring from all my dirty deals

I'll see you in the next life, wake me up for meals

Been there, done that:

Re: Susano's Song-Based DC NPCs

Warren Zevon's a veritable goldmine of inspiration for DC NPCs. I expect he's tossing back a few with Hunter S. Thompson right about now...

Excitable Boy

(Warren Zevon & LeRoy P. Marinell)

I considered, then dropped this one.

Description:

As a young man, the otherwise unnamed protagonist of He Went To Paris, traveled to the city of Paris, "Lookin' For Answers/To Questions That Bothered Him So." He never found what he was looking for, but instead fell in love with the city, the warm summers, the wine, and the cheeses, and eventually stayed for a good four to five years. He then went to England, fell in love (with an actress named Kim), and got married. Supporting himself by playing the piano, he lived there for twenty years, raising a son by the name of Jim. However, World War II took his son way, while the German air raids killed his wife and cost him an eye.

His world in ruins, he recalled the question he never had answered, so he found work on an outgoing freighter and left England "without a sound." At best guess he worked as a sailor for some time, "skidded the ocean," eventually ending up in the Caribbean. Now, aged 86, he spends his time fishing, writing his memoirs, and generally accepting his life.

"He Went To Paris" was built around the Sailor package from Pulp Hero. He's been around, seen a lot, and even at age 86 is still going strong (albeit slower). Technically he's alive in 1973 or so, but you could easily adopt him to just about any genre -- swap W.W.II for W.W.I and he could be the perfect pulp contact or party NPC!

Description:

Dr. Feelgood is the street name of a man whose real name is Jimmy. He also has the nicknames of "Rat-Tailed Jimmy" and "Jigsaw Jimmy." He's the leader of a gang and supplies drugs to most of Hollywood. Dr. Feelgood also has connections to the Mexican mob, who apparently set him up in the first place, and also keep the police heavily bribed, thus allowing Jimmy to run his business freely. He's successful enough to afford a customized '65 Chevy and proclaims himself to be the king of the Barrio. However , word has it that Jimmy is a two-time loser, and he may soon be taking the hit for all of his dealing and going down in a bad way.

Dr. Feelgood, from the Motley Crüe song of the same name, is a perfect Dark Champions Contact or street-level ganger of the PCs to take down on the way to a larger target. To make him more powerful, increase the point level and number of his followers and give him some levels with handguns.

Description:

Possibly autobiographical (or an idealized autobiography), the protagonist of Son Of A Son Of A Sailor seems to be based on Jimmy Buffett himself, who really did spend time cruising the Caribbean while living out of his boat. In this character sheet, I've taken the liberty of mixing elements of Son Of A Son Of A Sailor with the song A Pirate Looks At Forty to create a single, composite, character. In truth, the two go together quite well, creating a well-rounded and interesting character. Game-wise "Son" makes an excellent contact for PCs who find themselves in the Caribbean. He's been around, knows the islands, knows how to handle a boat, and knows a little of the illicit drug trade. He's not a major player (a little smuggling -- Cuban cigars maybe -- a little grass running), but he did well enough to make his share of money. These days, however, he's faced with the prospect of growing old and the rather depression fact (for him anyway) that the last Spanish treasure fleet sailed well over 200 years ago. Still, he might find it within himself to engage in one last adventure, especially if its on the high seas.

To make "Son" more powerful, give him some appropriate ex-smuggler Contacts, more AK and PS skills (relating to the islands and odd jobs performed on and around them), WF: Handguns, some Languages (French, Spanish, Creole), and boat powerful enough he'd need to pay points for it.

Description:

A college student studying to be a doctor, Maxwell Edison is also a sociopathic serial killer, dispatching his victims with a silver hammer he uses to deliver crushing blows to the skull. As with many serial killers/sociopaths he's fairly intelligent with an engaging personality, but he's also a cold-blooded killer, with at least three victims to his credit (a fellow student, a professor, and a judge).

Maxwell has been written up to be a fairly normal, if highly intelligent, human. He seems to be very good at stealth (often sneaking up on his victims from behind), and is rather adept at producing his hammer quickly, using it to batter the heads of his victims. His silver hammer seems to be a rather ordinary carpenter's claw hammer, albeit brightly polished.

Taken from the Beatles song Maxwell's Silver Hammer,Maxwell Edison is perfect as a minor-league Dark Champions villain. He's not much of a threat against the average Dark Champions PC (even a street-level one), although you could up his STR, DEX, and SPD to make him more dangerous if you wish. The trick with Maxwell, as with any other serial killer, is tracking him down.

Re: Susano's Song-Based DC NPCs

Very useful. While I'm not sure if I'm going to use any of the NPCs created in the thread' date=' they are giving me ideas about how to use the Hero System (especially as I'm a neophyte).[/quote']

Re: Susano's Song-Based DC NPCs

Have you visited my website?

Not before, but I'm checking it out now, and I'm seeing a lot here that will definitely be of use to me, especially because of the campaign idea I have in mind. (Perhaps a very unique campaign idea, perhaps not).

I might as well go into more detail, as to provide an idea of what I have in mind. I've covered this before in greater detail on my blog, at count_zeroor.livejournal.com. So I'm going to try to give the Short Version.

In High School a friend and I wrote a "manga" for our High School Anime Club. I use quotes there because it wasn't particularly a manga, in that it was never drawn. In fact, I've come to refer to it, affectionatly, as The Anime Club Self-Insertion Crossover From Hell, in that we inserted characters from many series, and many of our friends in the club became protagonists in the story. We wrote two "seasons". The first season had us taking on a certain right-wing fundamentalist evangelical who is (or at least was) on a certain TV program who has well known problems with a certain character on a certain obnoxious childrens' television show who shares a common color with a grape, who was out to destroy anime. No, we didn't even bother changing the guy's name. You wouldn't know who he is anyway (;)). Season Two had us squaring off against his master, the dark and sinister alien warlord Kylaar Daas, who was, unlike last season's villain, extremely competent. The season ended with us taking his base on the moon, and seizing his Stargate (as in Stargate SG-1-type Stargate), while he got away, setting up next season (which was definitely intended to be the final season)

Well, time has passed (almost 5 years) and my friends and I from the anime club have graduated and scattered across the US. However, now, in my nostalgia, I have begun to develop ideas for the third season, inspired by new anime series I've seen, and my own maturing as a writer. I ripped off a lot on previous seasons. Seriously, if people thought Eragon was derivative, they've got nothing on season 1 & 2. However, I don't have my friends from high school to keep me honest as far as keeping the characters equally Mary Sue, as opposed to one (such as me) getting more Mary Sue than the others. So, I intend to use Hero System to keep me somewhat honest. I intend to use rules, mechanics, and general advice contained in Star Hero, Champions, Dark Champions, and Ninja Hero to assist me in this. (I considered BESM, but it doesn't have enough crunch for what I need).

Alternatively, if it doesn't work out for the original cast, I might have Season 3 be in a similar place with the nonexistent film between "Desperado" and "Once Upon A Time In Mexico" in the "El Mariachi" series, referenced, but kept off screen. Instead, I'd just change the ending somewhat from how I intended to end Season 3, which was a good ending, but killed off Daas in a deliberately final fashion.

But, anyway, enough with my major threadcrapping, back to the music.

(Also, if you see me posting in the Star Hero board asking for advice on how to write up Mecha, Federation and Klingon starships, plus the White Base, Nadescico, and the SDF-1, once I get Star Hero, this is why).

I rather large update is planned for either tonight (uhm... fat chance of that) or later tomorrow.

Oh, and much thanks for writing up Sephiroth - as he is one of the characters in the Anime Club Manga (albiet with a radically different personality - he's much^4 more of the vain prettyboy).

I didn't do that one. Look at the bottom of any character page, if it doesn't say "character sheet created by Michael Surbrook" then it isn't one of mine, but was submitted to me.

Oh... um, give Max my complements then, if he isn't on the boards (or doesn't read this thread... or something). ^_^;;;;

Re: Susano's Song-Based DC NPCs

It's probably been suggested or thought of already' date=' in that case; a second vote for 'Sympathy for the Devil' by the Rolling Stones. I'd like to see your version of their version of the Devil..[/quote']

Sorry, I'll pass on that one.

Re: Susano's Song-Based DC NPCs

This one may seem really involved' date=' but it might be an interesting exercise: Pink, as in the main character (as protagonist isn't quite the right word) for Pink Floyd's album The Wall. How does that one sound?[/quote']

Heh... I'd been considering Pink for some time. But I'd really need to get the lyrics to all of the The Wall first. I have also debated Tommy.
