Last week for my wife's birthday, we went to the Fathom Events playing of Labyrinth. Still a fun movie to see and was great to see on big screen for first time in 30 years. Even funner, they put an episode of the Storyteller, the Jim Henson series relating stories and fairy tales from around the world with John Hurt doing the storytelling.

The Bridge. This is the original; Danish-Swedish co-production.

After episode 1 where a dead body found on the bridge between Sweden and Denmark turns out to be two dead bodies, the killer ups the ante by saying there are five truths to be revealed. The first was to do with where a body is found can determine whether the crime can be solved; the second is that the homeless are invisible until you mass poison a whole bunch of them; the third is about how bad landlords are and the killer demonstrates this by kidnapping a homeless guy and draining his blood with 4 property landlords given the chance to save his life by giving a ransom of 20 million Euros, the fourth is about immigration and how immigrants cannot get a fair shake and the fifth is about child labour with five kids to be killed unless five organisations are set on fire.

The killer originally contacts a journalist and puts a bomb in his car which does not explode but gave him the idea that it would.

Two police officers are investigating one a family man from Denmark and the other a Swedish woman with no social skills. It is not mentioned that she has Aspbergers syndrome but that is what she has. It is funny but it is difficult to empathise with her.

The series is well worth staying with because it has a nice build and you find out what is really going on.

The City and The City. Now finished all 4 parts. Two cities that exist side by side and the inhabitants of one are not allowed to look at the other where there is a join. A murder of a woman in one city leads to the other city as an inspector tries to solve what happened while still grieving for his missing wife who may have disappeared into the other city.

If someone looks into the other city 'Breach' may occur and the 'Breach' police intervene.

There is a link to a possible third city that may be the source of mysterious artefacts that have been found in the second city. A professor published a banned book and the murdered girl was a student of his as was the police inspector's wife.

A fascist organisation is campaigning for the mayor of the one city while an American company seems to be backing the candidate.

The story is a bit convoluted but it works. Based on the book by China Melville.

Cannonball Run II.  Never saw it before.

It wasn't as good as the first one, but leaves one question.

How did Shirley MacLaine go from Terms of Endearment to Cannonball Run II in a year?  It took Faye Dunaway seven years to go from Network to Supergirl.

(I know, I go right for the jugular, the then again that's where all the yummy blood is.)

Actors, even successful ones, have learned from experience that it's rarely a good idea to turn down work. Those who do often find their careers and lives suffer massive damage because of it (the late Roy Scheider turning down The Deer Hunter, which won Oscars, is a perfect example of a move like that backfiring).

Been catching up on Gotham. Still really enjoying it. Love watching the villains and Bruce as they more and more become who we know they become. Really loving Cameron Riley Monaghan as Jerome and his sane brother. Truly scary after brother got hit by gas.

Dr No -- One of the younger members of our D&D group had just recently seen the first Austin Powers movie, but hadn't seen any of the earlier James Bond films, so he didn't get most of the references. That got me in a mood to re-watch a few of the old ones, starting with the first. It's generally an enjoyable film, so long as you ignore the physics of the nuclear reactor set-piece at the end.

Diamonds Are Forever -- I usually watch this to see Las Vegas around 1971, more than for the plot. The car chase in and around the Downtown area of Las Vegas is one of the few in media that actually almost works with the building locations (Con-Air's plane would have needed to fly sideways and backwards to pass everything it did in order, for example). And it's fun to see what I associate with 70s Casino decor again. The plot's okay, though the action borders on cartoonish in several places.

Solo Story... not awful, but kinda boring... and Han is being retconned as a nice guy... meh.

Finished Dear White People, Season 2... hilarious and really well done.

Half way through Shooter, Season 2... started meh, spiraled into dumbness.

Went back to Blacklist, Season 3... my god this show is bad. After Season 1, it is really awful.

The Rain, Season 1, almost through... still pretty good, atmospheric, well acted Danish post-apocalyptic sci-fi.

Best things I watched though... "Ink" and "The Frame"... two low-budget fantasy/s-f films by Jamin Winnans. "Ink" has a very Neil Gaimin like "Neverwhere" feel.  "The Frame" is a touching concept that spirals into surrealism and meta-commentary on film making... but really engaging.

The Bridge Season 2. A year after the events of season 1 a collaboration between the Danish and Swedish police occurs again when a ship hits the bridge. There is no crew aboard but five young people one of whom has died.

Saga and Martin are reunited. They have not seen each other since the funeral of Martin's son. Martin and his wife are separated and Saga now has a boyfriend.

Things get more complex from there with a bunch of environmental activists killing people, Martin trying to deal with his ex-colleague Jens who is in prison, Saga trying to cope with her boyfriend, two new Swedish detectives trying to help Martin and Saga, a dying company CEO being invited to speak to an EU summit, the summit's organiser trying to get the summit and her personal life organised, a student trying to keep her competitive edge getting herself into quite a bit of trouble and the CEO's brother trying to look after his sister.

It all makes for interesting viewing. Well worth a look but better to see season 1 first.

A Series of Unfortunate Events - just re-watched over the last few weeks with the gal that comes over to help with the girlfriend's daughters.  She's as much of a book-nerd as my girlfriend, and hadn't seen it but had read some of the Lemony Snicket books when she was younger.

Absolutely brilliant show.

I'm almost done with Season 2 of The Expanse on Amazon Prime. It feels very much like Traveller to me, which is good.

Just watched Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace again, mainly because I haven't in many years, but a little to see the "evidence" for the Darth Binks theory. George really needed an editor.

Just watched Along with the Gods. A firefighter has to withstand seven trials for his life so he can be reincarnated. Along the way, his brother is killed and becomes a vengeful spirit. In the end, the guardians have to protect both brothers from the sins of the past.

There's a subplot of an old man who sees the guardians working. Midcredits three other guardians come for him in the night. Problem is his house is protected by a household god. The offscene battle might have commenced after an exchanging of words.
