Re: What Have You Watched Recently?

BBC Robin Hood, Season One.

Oh...my!

This is the best !@#$%@!ing version to come down the pike since Errol Flynn. Plus, the guy they got to play the Sheriff of Nottingham was SO EVIL in character that I HAD to steal him for a D+D game I was running.

The heroes are troubled. The Sheriff is Evil. There's an interesting Holy Land subplot that keeps coming up, and I simply cannot get enough of the fact that Robin Hood has realized that he cannot beat the Sheriff simply by killing him, that he has to, in fact, win the hearts and minds of the people of Nottingham.

It's smart, it's sassy, and for the first time in a really long time, I REALLY feel like I'm looking at Robin Hood for real.

The DVDs cost a bunch, but you can buy them, then spread them around and give them to your friends. Can't wait for Season Two.

Plus, if you are running a Robin Hood style game in any system, the soundtrack for this (Available on Amazon) is a MUST!

Gojira.

Pretty neat seeing the different story presented by Gojira as opposed to Godzilla.

Mike, is House as awesome as it looks to be on commercials?

House is... uhm... addicting? I guess I can put the DVDs down whenever I want, but....

It's basically a mystery story clothed in medical jargon. Initially the episodes were really repetitious -- strange illness, false diagnosis, seizure, risk of death, then House puts the clues together and "bang!" healthy patient. But I kept watching as the interplay between House, Wilson, Cuddy, and House's three specialists was great. Now, as the show has progressed they've mixed things up a bit, so every case doesn't seem like the last one. They aren't afraid to kill people either. I'm tearing through season 2, and would love to borrow 3 or 4 on DVD is possible. On the other hand, I don't see myself owning them, as they come across as "one-shot" viewings IMO.

Nice dissection, thanks!

If I hear about anyone with a 3 or 4 to loan, I'll make sure to pass along your name.

EDIT: The above makes sense if you realize I have a friend with a 600+ deep Netflix list, and no fear of using it!

Watched Shoot Em Up.

Proof that "Dark Champions" characters can easily clock in at 300+ points.

Also, Armor defined as "Dead Thug or Other Object of Opportunity" is a must have Dark Champions power.

I enjoyed Shoot 'em Up, though I felt the last 10 minutes or so was a little weak compared to the previous 70 minutes of high octane action. Still the movie was a lot of fun.

Actually, I'm fairly certain we're in the middle of S4 now; unless I've been watching it for so long that I didn't even realize when S4 went and I'm on S5, but I'm fairly certain we're in the middle of S4 (House: Survivor!)

I'm still kind of hoping that Viggo Mortensen's portrayal of Alatriste will make it to DVD. Those books rock. And I really don't want to pay 50 bucks for the subtitled import. I will if I have to, but if you thought the swashbuckler genre was dead, pick up

Captain Alatriste

Purity of Blood

and The Sun over Breda

There's two more coming

Re: What Have You Watched Recently?

Josh and I watched Robin and Marian last night, which is an older flick with Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn in the title roles.

What a waste of their talent. :ugly:

Then we watched some Animaniacs, and got to the "65th Anniversary Special." Josh laughed so hard that he started coughing, and couldn't stop. The writers had a LOT of fun with that one.

Sounds great! :)

I was watching my (no subtitles) copy of Dai Nipponjin during my workout this morning. Insanely funny film; it's a mock-umentary on the very ordinary life of a 40-something Japanese slacker type, dealing with his money troubles, failed marriage, senile father, etc, interspersed with scenes of him as a giant fighting absurd monsters. The faux-news reel footage of the 1930s Dai Nipponjin alone is worth the price of the DVD.

Features cameos from some of the cast of the original Ultraman, and has an almost coherent mythology.

As soon as this is available with subtitles, I'm definitely making this a party DVD.
