He will travel on a sailing ship, The Black Swan. The first programme starts in Venice with preparations for the voyage and a major Venetian festival. Francesco is an architect and historian and his family actually do live in Venice. The following programmes deal with sailing down what was the Yugoslavian coast to Albania and then onto Greece and its islands before heading off to Istanbul. Each programme is half an hour long and is a nice little chunk. Francesco looks at what Venice did and what traces of their rule remains. This includes one apartment which has the top corner of a temple. If you like history this is fascinating. Francesco meets Nana Mouskouri in Athens and Tirana's mayor who is trying to improve life for his fellow Albanians. He tries Turkish wrestling and a Turkish bath. Based on the true story of how the British spirited £10 million of industrial diamonds out of Amsterdam just before it was occupied by the Germans. Tense stuff. Three men, two diamond specialists and a soldier go to Holland and have to get past the refugees trying to flee. They have under 24 hours to get the merchandise and get out again. Complicated also by the holiday. One of the specialist played by Peter Finch is the son of a diamond dealer and his father tries to persuade his colleagues to give up their stones as well. Some of the stones are in the bank and with no caretaker they have to break in and blow the safe. Some of the Dutch military might be fifth columnists and these indeed dog the tails of the group. The soldier, a major, delivers explosives to the nascent Dutch resistance disposing of a Dutch soldier in the process. The diamond dealers are late and narrowly avoid fifth columnists. The resistance have to help to blow the safe and take out the timer but the fifth columnists turn up and a firefight ensues. The men have to get through refugees before reaching the port and a destroyer home. This is black and white and I thoroughly recommend a viewing. His Girl Friday. Rosalind Russell is a journalist who decides to retire and marry an insurance man. She tells her ex husband editor Cary Grant this and he schemes to thwart her. He tries to whet her interest with a man about to be executed. What follows next is screwball comedy. This is made in 1940 and the dialogue crackles along. The film is an adaptation of the stage comedy The Front Page, in which the Rosalind Russell character was male (It was written in the 1920s, when a woman covering a murder trial was almost unheard-of), which obviously changed the relationship with the editor character (because, again, 1920s). Today you simply don't see the Hollywood trope of an ex-husband or ex-wife trying to win back the spouse who divorced them. The Cary Grant character's behavior would be unacceptable in a modern film. Runaway was written and directed by Michael Crichton, with a score composed by Jerry Goldsmith (his first all-electronic soundtrack). It's a movie that I watch every once in a while, along with Crichton's Looker and Westworld. I've got the DVD of Runaway in my collection, but it's currently included for streaming on Amazon Prime. I've finally started watching Supernatural at the behest of both of my daughters. I'm most of the way through Season 2. It's essentially The X-Files without the FBI. In fact they scoff at the idea of aliens, which I thought was a strange hubris since they deal with all manner of weirdo stuff. A 1950s science fiction film wherein the authorities try to track a source of interference and find an alien who ditches his spacesuit and thus becomes invisible. He dies as his suit loses its breathing atmosphere. See it as a curiosity. Old Mother Riley Meets the Vampire. This film stars Bela Lugosi who starred in it as he needed to get back to America. He is the only reason to watch this film as he is head and shoulders above the material. Fear the Walking Dead season 1. This was on TV for the last six weeks and was an interesting introduction to the Walking Dead franchise. It starts off normal as the outbreak begins and things go downhill. La Vuelta. Coverage of the last cycling Grand Tour of the year. Unexpectedly brilliant as Team Sky not all powerful and another British rider came to the fore and won. My main problem is figuring out which past episodes to watch to validate my recent experience with the series. (Hulu is carrying the first nine seasons, at least for now). I've been concentrating on things like the Ice King's storyarc (he does some pretty bad things, but his backstory is one of the most tragic you will ever see in American animation), and I'm looking for more episodes with The Lich -- who is the closest thing this series has to pure, unadulterated evil and is duly terrifying, especially when he speaks. (Although at one point Finn calls the Lich "basic" and even boring because he is pure evil, as opposed to something more nuanced. In that incident he might have been speaking for the writers who had outgrown that sort of thing (Finn, who grows up as the series goes on, certainly has!). Most of the scenes in the trailer were from the first third of the movie, and the remainder has strong echoes to the The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Most of the emotional beats in the plot are purely concerned with the endangered dinosaurs, the humans are mostly cookie-cutter characters. Dinosaur special effects are generally good, but some of the scenery is a bit wonky and obviously CGI. Musical score is mostly forgettable (like the last movie), and uses the Jurassic Park theme (wrongly*) in a few places for nostalgia. (4K Blu-ray) *The original Jurassic Park score used the JP theme to denote the park's leitmotif, but here it was separated and became a general nostalgia hook when showing dinosaurs unrelated to the park itself. This does three dimensional mapping of both cities but catch the Istanbul one if you can it is much better. With Athens you get the link to the port and the old docks plus the battle of Salamis. You also get improvements that the emperor Hadrian made to the city. Istanbul has the aqueduct and both the Roman and Islamic fortifications. It covers the Hagia Sofia and the mosque that replaced it. I would thoroughly recommend this and the previous series covering Italy. Gotham. Season 4. This has Ras Al Ghul coming to the fore. It also has the reappearance of the Falcone family as Gordon tries to thwart the Penguin. The Riddler is released from his ice prison and has trouble adapting to his condition as he is not as smart as he was before. Professor Pyg makes his entrance and exit. Butch becomes Solomon Grundy which was pretty good. Ivy grows older thanks to an experiment with potions and goes off the deep end. Unfortunately Jerome Valeska comes back and we find out he has a brother. The Scarecrow is back with his fear gas but is also a killer which kind of defeats the object. Thankfully Jerome is killed by series end but not before his brother becomes another prototype Joker. There were some good moments in the series but I feel let down that at the end they seem to want to tackle the No Man's Land storyline from Batman for the next series. It was delightful to see Hugo Strange back at the end. As well as a possible Manbat and another villain I could not identify. Selina Kyle suffers a spinal injury thanks to the 'Joker' and we also get a prototype Bat signal. The Scarlet and the Black. The true story of a Monsignor in the Vatican who organised the hiding of escaped Allied prisoners of war and Jews in and around Rome during World War 2 and the SS Colonel who tried to stop him. Fun movie, probably on a par with early Potter movies. The kid stuff was kid stuff and didnt really detract. REcommend, especially for those of you with kids. After police officers are killed by a booby trap after finding a drug house stuffed with dead bodies, another solution is required. One of the police officers is seconded to another unit which uses a different set of tactics to tackle drug crime. This has a slow burn and is not really nice to the Mexicans. The Missouri Beaks. This is an odd duck of a Western. Jack Nicholson is the head of a bunch of rustlers causing trouble for a local rancher. Said rancher brings in a regulator played by Marlon Brando to tackle the problem. I can't understand why the move got a green light. It is worth seeing once, more for Nicholson than Brando. Momentum. A high tech robbery goes wrong with one of the robbers killing people and unmasking his boss in front of witnesses. The robber is killed and the robbers unknowingly pocket something else with the diamonds they steal. A group of cleaners are then sent after them Some of this is unpleasant, torture and attempted rape for example and it ends unexpectedly. Olga Kurylenko (from Quantum of Solace) is one of the crooks and James Purefoy is one of the cleaners after her. The Bodysnatcher. This film was the last one featuring Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff. It concerns a graverobber supplying corpses to a doctor in Edinburgh. This is set just a couple of years after Burke and Hare in the same city.
