Ternaugh
Paddington - Slate.com had a list of the best stuff leaving Netflix in November, and this movie about a bear in need of a home was in their "Must Watch" category. The movie's a delight, and I'll happily agree with that recommendation. (Netflix until November 16).

Ternaugh
Ready Player One - I'd missed this one in the theaters, and just got it today in the mail from Netflix. It's a serviceable plot, though it's obviously cribbed together from a variety of sources, including Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, Last Starfighter, and Tron, with too many pop-culture references thrown in to count. It's not a movie that I expect to age well, and probably one that I don't really need to see again. (Netflix DVD.com)

archer
NBC's new series Manifest I've never been a fan of how NBC handles science fiction and unfortunately this series is proving to be no exception. An airliner full of passengers disappears from the skies for 5 years then returns as if no time had passed. Spooky things ensue after the government lets the passengers out of quarantine. That's not a much different premise than several other shows from the last few years but NBC had deftly managed to avoid casting anyone interesting or writing stories which would make me care for the characters. archer
CBS remake series Magnum P.I. I was fully prepared to dislike this remake and only watched it out of morbid curiosity. But they've actually captured some of the charm of the original series while making most of the recurring characters more relevant. CBS has also gone out of their way to make multiple crossovers of minor characters from their (aging) Hawaii Five-0 series so a full-scale crossover event will be coming. I could see this series making it for another season and becoming a guilty pleasure.

death tribble
54 Hours: The Gladbeck Hostage Crisis. The true story of how two German criminals who tried to rob a bank ended up driving across Germany and Holland in a hijacked bus before they were ambushed in a car on the auobahn. This took place in August 1988. Part of the problem was police incompetence and bungling. Two hostages ended up dead and a police officer was killed in an accident. The police would not shoot to kill and would not put the hostages at risk. One of the robbers vowed to take a police officer with him in a shoot out. The other had an IQ of 79 and would do whatever his colleague told him. The behaviour of the press was also appalling. They managed to get interviews with the robbers and the hostages. One of the dead hostages was an Italian teenager who shielded his sister from the robbers on the bus when they tried to kill a hostage. The other was a German woman killed in the final confrontation with the police. Long John Silver. This is a follow up to the 1950s Treasure Island with Robert Newton as the titular character. Silver returns to Treasure Island with Jim Hawkins and other pirates to find more of Captain Flint’s treasure. If you liked Treasure Island with Robert Newton, you’ll like this. The Strange Love of Martha Ives. This film was the first film to have Kirk Douglas in it. Barbara Stanwyck and Van Heflin complete the cast. Years ago Stanwyck as a child tried to escape her aunt with young Van Heflin but police returned her. She kills her aunt when the old woman tries to beat her cat. The aunt’s lawyer makes her tell a lie to the police but she has to marry his son who becomes Kirk Douglas. Van Heflin returns to town and intrigue between the three follows. Interesting piece. Blackhawk Down. I had not seen it at all and took the opportunity to do so now. Quite a few British actors playing Americans but it is a good film. Invasion of the Bee Women. A government inspector is sent to a town where several men have died of heart failure. This turns out to be because some women have killed them during coitus. It is an odd film and risque in part as more women are forcibly recruited to continue the killing spree. There’s a Girl in My Soup. Peter Sellers plays a philandering restaurant critic who ends up with an American woman Goldie Hawn who has just split up with her boyfriend. This comedy has not dated well. Penny Gold. The police are investigating a murder of a woman who has a twin sister and find out it might be linked to the stamp trade. You can probably spot part of the twist coming in this one. Night Mail. This is a 1930s documentary which shows the mail train as it leaves London and goes to Scotland. The train is a mobile post office as the people there sort out letters for the Midlands and later Scotland. The staff change at Crewe as Scottish staff take over for the trip north of the border. It also shows post bags being collected by the train and deposited by the train which is impressive for the pre-digital age. Well worth a look. It is only about 20 minutes long. Turbulence. Lauren Holly battles Ray Liotta as he decides that he does not want to be legally executed so he’ll crash her plane. Worth a look at least once. Hermit
The Dragon Prince was incredibly enjoyable, with likable characters and good dialogue all around. It's clearly aimed at the youthful crowd but if one isn't snobbish about that, it's a very nicely delivered season of classic High Fantasy. Christopher
Disenchantment A series from the Simpsons and Futurama Creator, Matt Groening. Unlike those two previous series, there actually seems to be a overarching plot. And the 1st season did not end on a "Happily ever after" at all. Paradise PD Made by the same guy as Family Guy - and clearly visible. Personally I dislike this kind of "Puke Humor" as I call it and I only watched it by proximity. It is not quite as puky as Family Guy or Southpark after the first few Episodes, but I will be unlikely to watch the 2nd season. Unless by accident. Castlevania Yes, made based on the Video Game series. Everything about this show is 18+. Episodes are only 20 Mintues long. Season 1 was only 4 Episodes, with Season 2 clocking in at 8. But despite this, considerable amounts of time are placed on Charcter devleopment and even intrigue. I have not yet finished watching it. Ternaugh
2001: A Space Odyssey (50th Anniversary Edition) - This is a new 4K HDR release out today, from the recent 70mm "photochemical recreation" taken from the original photographic negatives (for the first time since the original release), and with the original theatrical sound remixed for 5.1 surround. The result is one of the best looking (and sounding) movies that I've seen.

Ternaugh
Murder on the Orient Express (2017) -- I have a soft spot for the 1974 Albert Finney version, but this one's serviceable, if a bit slow in places. Michael Hopcroft
7 hours ago, Ternaugh said: Murder on the Orient Express (2017) -- I have a soft spot for the 1974 Albert Finney version, but this one's serviceable, if a bit slow in places. (Netflix Blu-Ray) To me, David Suchet is the quintessential Poirot. If that series did a version of this story, I want to see it. I know he appeared in adaptations of several of the other novels, and of course there is a rich vein of Poirot short stories to look to. The Murder of Roger Ackroyd was controversial, as Christie cleverly abandoned one of the central premises of the mystery genre, but it works as a novel outside the genre as well. She had a gift for satire, and the Miss Marple stories, in which the sweet old spinster had "plumbed the depths of human depravity" simply by observing what happens beyond the placid facade of English country life, are often perfect examples. As satire, The Murder of roger Ackroyd is a masterpiece. Ternaugh and Christopher R Taylor
L. Marcus
Blade Runner 2049. Yes, it's not as complex a story as the first movie, and the morality is a lot more Black And White than Gray And Grey -- but by Odin's eye patch, it's a beautiful movie, well shot with epic music. Grailknight
Episode 1 of Titans. It was better than I anticipated. First off, it is loosely based on the comic. Robin is a detective on the Detroit PD but does have the same background and origin with Batman. Raven is a big change. She is a teen who has no idea of her powers or origin. There are mysterious cultists after her. Starfire is an amnesiac. She dresses in hooker chic club wear and is involved in looking for Raven in some capacity. Beast Boy robs an electronic store as a tiger and runs off with the latest game in his mouth. The show is pretty dark in theme. Starfire kills four Russian mobsters , one in a fight and the others are taken out when she is shot and her powers manifest. Raven's powers come to the fore when she is threatened by a cultist and he dies a grisly death. Robin brutalizes 8 thugs in an alley. Think Marvel Nexflix taken to the next step. The show is being published weekly so no binges until season 1 is over. there are currentl 4 episodes out. Christopher
Scott Ruggels
1 hour ago, Grailknight said: Episode 1 of Titans. It was better than I anticipated. Where can one see Titans? my watching: YouTube Wholesome: Flite Test. A group of young men evangelize for a Aviation and having loads of fun by making 5 dollar RC planes out of foamcore board, hot glue and packing tape, or try to make objects around the office fly, or review RC products, or do drone tricks, or fly back seat in high performance aircraft. They sell kits of their planes or downloadable free plans, and have really good customer service and a very family oriented community. Keith Appleton A musician from the Midlands, who builds and repairs model steam engines, while giving a clear explanation and very dry humor about what he is doing, delivered in his mellifluous, accent. Watching lathe and mill operations with his narration is very soothing. I have learned a lot about steam engines by watching him. History Buffs A show, where the host reviews big budget Historical Films, for their accuracy to events and is actually mostly positive, and entertaining. C&Rsenal hosted by Othais and featuring Mae, the show is a a examination of the small arms of the First World War, and the personalities involved in their creation. Othais, the jolly bear, spins his tales of the lineage, influences engineers and bureaucrats responsible for the creation of the pistols, rifles, machine guns, and one T-Gewehr used in the Great War. Diminutive Mae then takes the piece out to the range and demonstrates their operation and accuracy. They then conclude giving their reviews as to how successful a weapon design they think it was for the conditions of the War. Another soothing, but well produced show with a high density of information. Not Wholesome: Hotdiggedydemon a mix of Ren & Stimpy level animated shorts, though the quality of the animation is very high, and well animated rants about popular culture. GIFs with Sounds Viral video clips set to inappropriate sounds and music, for comedic effect. Humorous, but not for everyone. On James Lileks’ recommendation I watched the 1930 MGM political fantasy, Gabriel Over The White House , In prep for the midterms. Both the story of its creation and the film itself are wild. Not to spoil it, but FDR himself was involved in its script, and considered it one of his favorite films, and so did Adolf Hitler. On Netflix loved Daredevil Season 3. Recommend it. Second the recommendation of The Dragon Prince It’s good light high Fantasy, though the dialogue seems a bit modern.
