Sharknado

Finally saw this all the way through. It is preposterous and fun.

Lake Placid Legacy

A group of activists break into an area no longer featured on maps or google earth. This is based on a dare from another activist. they think they are dealing with environmental pollution but soon discover that someone was trying to weaponise crocodiles. It was ok.

Without a Clue

The central conceit of this Holmes and Watson story is that Dr Watson invented Holmes and we have Michael Caine's Holmes is a clueless actor that Ben Kingsley's Watson hired. Watson tries to get rid of Holmes but is forced to reemploy him when a Lord and Scotland Yard need someone to investigate stolen 5 pound sterling plates from the Royal Mint Entertaining.

Eat Locals

This is a vampire flic with vampire overlords gathering to allot territories only to find the opposition is after them with a view to ending their deaths once and for all. A number of well known faces to a British audience play the vampires. It was ok.

Davis Bowie Serious Moonlight tour

Footage of the Serious Moonlight tour. I found this was better than the Glass Spider tour but it still did not compare to Bowie's music on an individual level. It was nice to have Scary Monsters as one of the featured tracks. For bowie fans in the main.

Blade of the Immortal

This is Takashi Miike's 100th film. It is based on a manga of the same name. It starts off in black and white and then goes into colour when one of the protagonists becomes immortal. Manji is on the run protecting his now mad sister Machi. She is killed by Ronin who are after the price on Maji's head and he then kills all of them being severly wounded in the process. An old woman puts worms inside him which seal his wounds. However he has lost an eye and this remains so. Years later he is sought out by a girl called Rin after her father is killed and her mother is carried off. She wants the Ittu Ryu killed as they were the ones who killed her father and made off with her mother. At first Manji refuses as revenge is a bad course but after confronting one of the ryu who is menacing Rin and carrying her mother's head on one of his shoulders, he agrees to act as her bodyguard. Meanwhile the head of the Ryu is being asked by the Shogun to act as trainers to to his retainers. The head goes off to see the head of another ryu who he would otherwise have killed or forced to disband. After the death of one member and the injuring of another the Ryu is alert for Manji and set out to stop him. He is almost killed by one who is suffering from the same affliction as he is and wants to die. He gets into a draw with another. Other members of the ryu are being killed and you then find out that someone else is bumping members off for money but the ryu think it is Manji. Rin has a confrontation with the head of the ryu who had a personal reason for killing her father. His grandfather was kicked out of a ryu for using a non-standard weapon.by Rin's great grandfather. He won't kill her because she is like him a heretic. Manji and Rin clash with the bounty hunters leading one to come back and try and get even with them both at the climax. The head of the ryu finds out that he has been lied to and runs into a mass ambush outside the ryu he was visiting while most of the rest of his own people are killed back at their base. The climax is a mass battle between the head of the ryu with Manji and Rin on one side and samurai on the other. I have not seen so many dead in a samurai picture since 13 Assassins. The head of the ryu duels and kills the head of the samurai while Manji has a confrontation with the bountyhunter and kills him. This leaves a final fight between Manji and the head of the ryu who Manji just cannot let walk off the battlefield. The colours in this stand our. While the majority wear similar clothing several people wear colourful costumes which makes them stand out. It is gory but you have different weapons like chain and three sectioned blades used to some effect. If you don't like subtitles you won't like this.

This evening my niece's school, Oregon State, plays their second-round game in March Madness against Oklahoma State.  I know my sister does not like sports, and my Brother-in-law seems oblivious to it. So it's pretty sure my niece doesn't care about the basketball team. She started taking online lessons last semester after two years at PCC. I have no idea how long it's been since she set foot in Corvallis -- possibly never since her admission tour.

What I'm getting at is I do plan to watch the game. The Beavers (oh what an unfortunate choice that turned out to be)) are only my team during baseball season (where there are a surprising perennial powerhouse) bhut I'm going to pay attention to them more to make up for  the rest of my family's indifference.

And Tony and SHIELD are gone, so no one to bankroll Avengers anymore, as I suspect that the Board of Directors now in charge of Stark enterprises wouldn't want to keep footing the bill.

Pepper should be in charge of Stark Enterprises. The Avengers were funded even during The Snap, but Falcon was a renegade  and then gone. I imagine he could go back on the payroll if his Accords status is cleared up.

I wasn't sure of that, as it looked like Pepper and Tony, with their daughter, had basically gone "off the grid" to a little farmhouse.

When Steve met Sam Wilson he was working at the VA, hence no longer active military. After the events of Civil War he was a wanted criminal on the lam. Then he was snapped and disappeared for five years. I'm thinking his credit would be pretty well nonexistent.

But he is an Avenger now, Tony does not have a good pay and benefits package?

As I recall, the loan was denied because of a 5 year wage gap and because he was basically working as a contractor now which means inconsistent pay history.  I don't really agree with it but that was the reason given.

Ah, by that point I was only half watching. But dudes who do "high speed, high tech" work like Falcon get pay in accordance to their ability, and the risk. A lot of SF, SEALs etc left service to work in the "private" sector because of the pay. This dude is a Super, he should have several paychecks based on what is shown. So he would not Need a loan. Getting one is just good business.

Probably, but it was mentioned in Sam's speech that it had only been a few months since Endgame so he might've only done a couple jobs in that time.

Wasn't there also a line about his sister not being willing to take money from him directly, and it was his attempt to cosign the loan on an unprofitable business that got rejected?

That said, I definitely got the feeling that if it had been Steve Rogers or even Clint Barton asking, red tape and barriers to doing a favor for a superhero might have been conveniently pushed aside.

Yeah, there seemed to be a hint of that as well.

I wonder how much control Pepper still has?  She was the CEO, but it looked like she and Tony retired to the lake after the snap.
If she still had pull I'd imagine she would have kept the Avengers going.

For that matter, who was paying for the Avengers between Infinity War and Endgame?  It looked like Black Widow was running a team of some kind out of the Avengers Compound between movies.  Even if she did have to eat expired Peanut Butter.

They were probably just operating off the residuals from the first three movies.

What?

The Floating Dutchman

The discovery of a foreigner's body in te Thames leads to the police putting an undercover officer into a club to infiltrate a burgler outfit that specialises in robbing high class homes and stealing their jewellery. Dated.

Crossfire

Three Roberts feature in this film, Young, Mitchum and Ryan. A man is found dead in his apartment and a soldier maybe the culprit. The investigation eventually finds out that the man was killed because he was a Jew although in the original story he was gay. Worth a look.

Charlie Chan at the Olympics

The detective from Hawaii follows No 1 son to Berlin in 1936 after a remote controlled plane is found and the technology has been transported to Germany. For once the Germans are not the bad guys as the film came out in 1936. Interesting idea but dated.

Build My Gallows High

Robert Mitchum finds out that you do not walk out on Kirk Dpuglas. He and his partner are originally hired to find a woman who shot Kirk and took off with $40,000. Mitchum finds her and falls in love with her but then has to avoid Douglas and his own partner. But this is film noir so you know it ends badly. Really worth a look.

All About Eve

Finally saw this all the way through. Bette Davis is the theatricl actress who takes in fan Anne Baxter who sets out to replace her. George Sanders is perfectly slimy as the theatre critic and Marilyn Monroe has a small part. Having seen the play adaptation I have now seen the original source material.

I'm All Right Jack

This is a sequel to Privates on Parade with some of the same characters (Dennis Price, Richard Attenborough, TerryThomas and Ian Carmichael). Carmichael's Windrush goes to work in a factory and manages to cause a strike. Peter Sellars plays the shop steward Fred Kite. Again this is one to be seen.

Video Killed the Radio Star

Programmes looking at the videos of Depeche Mode, Crowded House, Tom Petty and Billy Idol

Elizabeth R

50 years ago the BBC presented a 6 episode series looking at the reign of Elizabeth I with Glenda Jackson playing Elizabeth fom just before she became Queen until her death. It looked at her surviving her sister Mary, the pressure to marry and secure a successor, her love for Robert Dudley, what to do about Mary Queen of Scots, the threat of the Armada and the Earl of Essex and death. It was and still is a triumph for Glenda especially as they make her look old in an age where there was no CGI

Unforgotten

A six part cop show and the fourth of the series. There is a delightful slow burn and no histrionics as the police carefully go about their business. A headless body is discovered in an old freezer. Who was he and how did he get there and where is the head ? You also see four other characters who will become involved. The kicker in this case is that the four suspects were probationary police officers at the time of the murder is what makes this compelling. The private lives of the two chief officers in the enquiry is also followed. One wants to retire and was off sick, is trying to sell up and her father is suffering from dementia. The other is just moving house as the enquiry begins. The whole thingis understated and wonderful.

U2 Experience Live in Berlin

Have not seen a concert by the band in ages and this is from the tail end of 2018. I like U2 so this was good.

The Hand of Night

A recently bereaved man comes on holiday to Morocco to see a doctor who has died just the day before. He falls in with an archaeologist and a mysterious woman. Worth seeing once for a different take on the supernatural. Not gory at all but it still has an atmosphere.

Foo Fighters live at Reading Festival 2019

Dave loves the festival and they have played numerous times there. He also played with Nirvana there. Lots of swearing but lots of Foo music and a rick roll as Rick Astley came out to sing with them. 2 houis and no advert breaks. If you like the band you will like this.
