The one with Donnie Yen.

I think that is the one I had to try twice to get. ;)

I first saw it on a laserdisk rental from "Scarecrow Video" in Seattle some 15 years ago?

That is probably the best video store in the world!

Re: What Have You Watched Recently?

The first 15 minutes of the Battlestar Galactica panel at Comic Con 2008. I would have liked to have watched the whole thing, but the interviewer was a real asshat. Wasn't too hard to tell that he had the whole panel uncomfortable with his constant cursing and coarse manners. They must have been pretty desperate to put this guy on the podium.

Haha, isn't it Kevin Smith moderating? Yeah, Smith is hilarious, but I wouldn't want him on that panel, he likes being the center of attention far too much. I'm actually watching the American Spaced dvds with new commentary, and Kevin Smith does the first few episodes. Was funny for a little while, but he really does get it far too off track.

Starship Troopers 3.

I liked it. Better than the second one as it captures that same cheesy, campy fascism we've come to expect from the Federation. The final scene with the speach by the new religious right branch of the Corp, really reminded me of Warhammer 40k and chaplains

Once you can convince your soldiers that there is an afterlife, and God is on your side - it's much easier to control them and get them to die for your cause. But, anyone who has ever read any history already knew that.

My only problem with the 3rd movie was a lack of technological advancement. The bugs still outstrip the humans. With a name like "The Federation" - I'd always assumed more than one planet of humans. The progress during a war for the entire infrastructure of more than one planet was mind bogglingly slow. They did a better job in the CGI series.

Oh man, I couldn't stand that movie. I know, it's "supposed" to be funny, but the first one barely pulled it off, and these last two are just awful. And why do they have to use the fantastic book by Heinlein to make some bad political satire? Oh well.

For myself, I've been watching Burn Notice for the past two days, and am almost done with season 1. Really liking it, but it's too bad they're a ways into season 2. The show's helping a lot for inspiration for Spycraft though.

Mr. Vampire -- an absurd horror-comedy about vampires and ghosts.

Watched that years ago. It was, well, OK. Did introduce me to the idea of Buddhist vampire handlers whose main goal was to appease the honored ancestors and escort them back to the grave, which is actually pretty cool.

I was thinking that it hadn't aged well and ended rather oddly. But it did kick off an entire genre of such films (I think it got has high as Mr. Vampire 5), and has a lot of neat ideas for ghost-busting priests for Hero and Feng Shui.

There's a Sammo Hung spin off called Encounters of the Spooky Kind that's worth a rental (or bargain bin purchase). Again, not a great movie, but some good moments, especially from a gamers point of view.

Sukebeban Boy - Urk. Um...

This is a film that will do more than make you ask "What the hell is up with Japan?" You'll also ask "What the hell is up with Humanity", and, if you're the reflective sort, "What the hell is up with me for watching this?"

Strangely amusing fighting schoolgirl live action comedy, interspersed with guro porn that is in at least two instances genuinely stomach turning. It's Four Chan: The Movie.

Just a very bad movie, despite moments when it works as a parody.

Note to self -- skip this one.

Re: What Have You Watched Recently?

I watched Hancock last night and found it amusing. I also think it was too short. at only 92 minutes, it seems compressed, and really could have used an extra 30 minutes to explore more of Hancock's character, as well as his interaction with Charlize Theron. It leaves at lot of unanswered questions. On the other hand, the sequences of superhuman strength are all pretty amazing. Flying bricks need watch for fun ideas.

Re: What Have You Watched Recently?

Is this the one you grabbed at GenCon?

Yup, along with a live action version of Devilman and YoYo Girl Cop.

Sukebeban Boy actually had good reviews, which I can sort of understand but not agree with. If not for the guro-porn, I'd have liked it for its parody value and "self aware bad movie" vibe. With the guro stuff, especially the first sequence, I couldn't enjoy the rest of the film. That tendency of mine to take stories too seriously, I expect.

I'm looking forward to YoYo Girl Cop; not sure how the live action Devilman will be, but I like the costumes as shown in the stills.
