Re: Cool Guns for your Games

Well, in game, regarding small arms, you basically have the following damage range:

1d3

1d6-1

1d6

1d6+1

1d6 + 1d3

2d6-1

2d6

2d6+1

2d6 + 1d3

3d6-1

3d6

3d6+1

That covers everything from .17 caliber handgun rounds to 14.5mm machine gun/anti-tank rifle rounds. Then there are ammo mods, like +1 Stun or AP, and weapon accuracy mods (+/- 1-2 OCV, -2 to +4 CV vs. range mods), and maybe whether the weapon is autofire or select fire, what the STR min for firing is, and so forth. And that's about it, for game purposes--maybe concealability might be relevant, and a few other things. But there's going to be a lot of granularity lost, like the comparative power of .50 AE vs. .500 S&W, for example. For game purposes, they're roughly the same, though in real life, the latter is a lot more powerful. Indeed, one of the granular things is that the muzzle energy and STR min would probably vary according to what ammo you loaded.

Speaking of .50 cal, Guncrafter Industries, maker of the .50 GI round (which is a great example of variable muzzle energy/STR min--the lightest loads are comparable to .45 cal, the heaviest are close to .44 magnum), has a converter kit for Glock 20/21 handguns, which you can swap out in order to fire the .50 GI round from one. The magazine capacity drops from 15 to 10 in the Glock 20, but it's an interesting conversion option.

I've seen these and even considered buying one... but its supposed to get up to .44 magnum KEs? First I heard of that. My understanding is the standard load is heavier (300 grains, I think) and about the same velocity as a typical .45 ACP (around 870 fps). I haven't looked into it too much, since their pistols START at about $2500... but it may be a purchase for a later time... At the very least, perhaps their .45 ACP American pistol, which is rated very highly as well.

Well, I think they have 4 or 5 different loadings, and the high-end one is comparable to .44 mag...but they usually use a lower one for better stability.

well, certainly interesting. Still, not in the budget for another year or so, likely. =) Hmmmm... still, if I changed from .45 super to .50 GI for my new pet project idea.... =)

Re: Cool Guns for your Games

it looks like the ammo from Guncrafters runs in the 5-600 ft/lbs range, maybe 700 with one of the older loads. the Taylor Knock out numbers, however.... WOW.

they have a pair of new custom copper hollowpoints, even lighter for caliber than the Barnes xpbs. 185 or 230 grains, but they expand to 1":eg:

Yep, might have to make that .50 GI my new thing... plus, they make excellent pistols from all the reviews I've seen. Hopefully they'll sell the internal setup to me if I ever go for that pistol. =)

What's a Taylor Knock out number?

Taylor knock out number is a system of estimating the ability of a cartidge to put down really big game. His numbers were based on the ammunition designs of iirc the 20s and 30s, but some still swear by them. Particularly those who prefer big bullets.

I accept they have some validity. OTOH, so does almost any theory of such things...

Re: Cool Guns for your Games

I'm waiting for this thread to be rerailed to show game related guns

Revolvers show up all the time in my games. So do semi-auto handguns.

But, if you want more gun porn I will give you a gun that has not shown up in my games....

The Pfiefer-Zeliska Nitro Express .600 Magnum

I recommend a wrist brace.

Or a bipod. Yikes. When you run out of ammo, you can just bludgeon someone to death with it.

I should do a write-up of this for Kazei 5. 30 STR replicates and 40 STR cyborgs should be able to fire it with no problem.

Rerailing: Modern Handgun websites with many semi-auto and revolvers on these sites:

http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CustomContentDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&content=11001 (a lot of S&W weapons in production were in production in the pulp era)

http://www.cz-usa.com/

Still in production weapons but found in pulp era

Re: Cool Guns for your Games

One of my pulp character's now in the modern era prefers a Holland&Holland Royal Double Rifle in .700 Nitro Express

A steal at 145,000 Pounds Sterling.

I kid you not.

while those are awesome, I would rather have one of these

I would probably stick to .375 H&H, though 416 Rigby or some such would work too...

I would rather have an H&H in a more reasonable caliber.

But "elephant guns" are an icon of the victorian-pulp era - so pulp character guy favors one.

And in .700 they are ideal for things that go bump in the night...

in .700 they are ideal for things that go bump on the next planet! ;)

In the older cartridges for a pulp era game, a double in .577-450 would be good, or a "gauge rifle" in 12 or 10 bore, maybe even up to an 8 bore, if the character is ludicrously strong... One thing that made the 4 and 8 bore guns work was the fact that the hunter wasn't usually the one carrying them! hmm, a 12 gauge paradox bored double and a 12 ga howdah gun combination should be feasible without being unbelievable.
