August 21, 200717 yr comment_1336002 Re: Military medals The British have a different award, The Victoria Cross. Any rank can win it but there are more posthumous winners than live ones. Rourke's Drift in the Zulu Wars saw the highest concentration of these awards being made. See the film Zulu. And due to the 1st and 2nd World Wars they are a lot harder to win. An example of winning one in the 1st World War was an Irish private who leapt onto a box of grenades which were about to go off. It killed him but spared his colleagues. There is a civilian form The George Medal and George Cross. The Island of Malta was awarded the George Cross.
