Rejected Names

Dave,

Thanks for this. With the gun ones I know that we have Gattling on the list. I thought that the others could go on as a result. The gun ones may be more appropriate for Dark Champions.

For the mean time, three new ones

Jensen Interceptor (which was a fast car)

Liberty Hex (Patriotic Witch)

Pathogen

Here's a few of mine:

From the League of Black Hearted Men:

Gregory Talon (may fail the proper name test, although Talon isn't his original last name -- a childhood accident left him handless, until he designed mechanical claws and changed his name)

Brother Assassin (the name was taken from the title of a novel, but the character isn't anyone who appeared in the novel)

Dark Lensman

Erl-King, The (from a Goethe poem)

Mr. Crowley (might also fail the proper name test; he is a descendant of the "famous" magician, Alistair Crowley)

Spectator

Others:

Doctor Decay

Mister Mass

Witherwing

Monk, The

Killrazor

Burning Diamond

Burning Fiend, The

Malleus

Looking Glass

Green Thumb

Faceless Lord, The

Mandragora

Walking Web

Bioravager (Don't end up on his operating table.)

Dead Ringer

Phage (consumes matter)

Tchernobog (evil Russian deity/spirit most recently made famous by the Blood series of games; before that was used as the demon in the Night on Bald Mountain segment of Fantasia)

The Manhunters (I had that name before I knew these were Green Lantern foes.):

Mantrap

Pitfall

Deadlock

The Death Dealers:

Scarmind

Scumbagger

Strafer

Soulrender

Deathbelle

Timetwist

Victor Six

King Blizzard

Negaton (negates energy)

Nuclear Fire

Solex Spider

Mister Styx

Some of these characters have been around for a very long time; many were originally written up for Villains and Vigilantes (probably few on this board even remember that game -- I'm so oooooold.) Because of this, it's possible some of the names subsequently appeared somewhere. I did my best to filter for that, but as I don't read *every* comic, that task is impossible.

Old Champs Names

Dave,

The latest installment. These are all names that were used in previous editions of Champions for groups like Eurostar, Clown and Voice for example. For this reason I think they fail to qualify. However some of the names have already got through being (I believe) fairly generic ie Frost and Goshawk. Some of the ones here like Requiem and Scatterbrain might thus make it on but I don't think Arrowhead and Death Commando would. Be that as it may here is the list.

Arrowhead

Carrier

Death Commando

Death Singer

Graf Von Gausrom

Halfjack

Irredencia

La Pulga

Le Sone

Lion Slayer

Lung Hung

Merry Andrew

Requiem

Scatterbrain

Silly Part 1 (A to E)

Dave,

These are the ones that failed the silly test. Or so I think is the reason. I also assume that anything slightly rude would also fail. Like Bastard Sword for example or Psycho Slut. The latter was one that was used by the writers of the Aces series and was censored from that as well. Of the silly names there are over 250. So in consideration for your eyesight I have only done a first batch of 60.

If however you want the rest in one foul swoop, so it shall be.

Early in the original thread on the old boards, we decided to leave out the names from previously published Champions supplements until it was verified that the characters were still extant on 5e Champions Earth, since the list was originally intended as a conceptual experiment within that setting. That's why Steve's super names make the list regardless of any rule they might break. Heck, he even got in a duplicated pair, Thunderbolt 1 & 2.

Many of the more generic names (e.g. Juggernaut) that have seen publication in 4e (and prior) books made the list, as I could easily believe any claims of originality or prior art on the part of the contributor.

Are we looking at the same list? Requiem and Scatterbrain are on the list posted here.

All of these except Hodmandod are effectively nonsense words without translations provided. Hodmandod got cut because Snail is a lousy super name.

My eyeballs thank you for your consideration. hlmtsmly Batches of 60 is fine.

Yup, whacked these for being too silly and/or just dumb. Except Blue Blazes. I was going to put that one back, wondering what I had been thinking, but I found that it had not been removed. It's entry 0536 on the current roundup.

'Gitanes' does mean gypsies but it's also the name of a popular brand of French cigarettes. Most people in this country would assume you were referring to the latter.

Reasons why 'Hodmandod' is a good name

1. It sounds good.

2. Precedent - The Flash fought a GA/SA villain called 'The Turtle' who planned to beat the scarlet speedster by travelling too slow for him to cope with. He is now in prison. Although the plan, and the character, was clearly stupid, such things exist in comic book universes.

3. Not every superbeing has to be a kickass nuclear lightning bolt-hurling laser-god with tiger DNA.

4. British things are often naff, especially in comparison to American things.

Silly Part 2 E to L

Dave,

Here is the second installment. I must admit to a liking for old style ones that were in the list like I of the Hurricane, Humus Sapiens and the wonderful Gronk the Talking Monkey with a Zap Gun.

Some of these are mine particularly things like Horrid Hun. I include it for completeness sake but am grateful that you did adapt the idea on one of the others cf Pillaging Persian begat Pillage and Persian.

I can only proof read one list at a time. The one I looked at did not have Requiem and Scatterbrain. If they are on now, fair enough.

Normal more General Names warning

Dave,

After going through the Silly Names there will be juat over 250 names left which don't qualify as silly but might be too General or Specific or fail the Genre test. Some of these I will make a case for as I would like to see them included so they will only start going up after the Silly ones are finished.

These I will again break down into digestable chunks, maybe 50 at a time or smaller if I am making a case for inclusion.

I just correct a few spelling and translations

Les Gitane - French for gypsy, a family of tattooed gypsy mages

As Doug MacRae said it's a brand of cigarettes.

You can use

"les Gitans" (means exactly the same thing; "les gitanes" would indicate a female-only group

I just help for translations in french of some english words

if it can help.

Roundup

0382 - Bette Noire (French: Black Beast)

-> right spelling is "Bête noire"

0589 - Bouc (French: Scapegoat)

--> Bouc just means goat

translation for scapegoat is "bouc emissaire" (litt Emissary goat)

0813 - Chasseuse (French: Huntress)

--> french for Huntress is "chasseresse"

1340 - Dragon-ciel (French: Sky Dragon)

--> I know it's a official NPC but the name doesn't mean anything. i don't have any satisfying way to translate that in a nice way :

Sky dragon would litteraly be "dragon du ciel" (but it sounds ugly) or dragon celeste (celestial dragon).

Anyway he's dead so who cares ?

1550 - Fantôme, la (French: Phantom)

--> grammary problem : Le fantome ("la" is female, the word "fantome" is male gender)

1587 - Feu Boule (French: Fire Ball)

--> Boule de feu.

1710 - Fusion

1711 - Fusionne, la (French: Fusion)

--> the correct translation is "la Fusion" which is too close from the previous IMHO

1747 - Gaul (France in Roman era)

--> Gaule but i would not suggest you to use that name

"avoir la gaule" (to have the G.") is a french slang expression to errr... describe the fact that a man is in a state of sexual excitation. (i don't joke)

2073 - Homme de Gel, l' (French: Frost Man)

2074 - Homme de Glace, l' (French: Ice Man)

2075 - Homme de Magie, le (French: Man of Magic)

--> it's syntaxically correct but it really sounds too bad in french. avoid hero names with "homme"

3050 - Monsieur Diamont (French: Mister Diamond)

--> Monsieur Diamand

4939 - Triomphe, la (French: Triumph)

--> Le Triomphe (male gender)

cheers

D.

  1. Maybe to you.
  2. Turtle evokes "slow but impervious." Snail evokes "crunchy vermin you don't want in your garden" or "French snack." The Flash villain was dumb, but the name is salvageable, unlike Snail.
  3. Lower power doesn't mean having to pick a name that makes you sound like a wimp.
  4. Assuming "naff" means good or cool, I refer you to counterpoint #1.
