I'm pretty certain this is addressed in one of the texts I

have at home on the shelf but as I am currently at work

and I am killing some time working up a build so.....Well, you get

the idea. Anyway....

Let's say you have a weapon much like the old 'spring rifle'

as described some years back in a product by (I belive)

FGU. The weapon is a carbine which fires flechettes and the

flechettes are propelled not by gunpowder or any chemical

but rather by a ratcheted spring mechanism that the operator

winds up before combat. As there is no chemical explosion,

the audio signature from such weapons is very slight, perhaps

a whiring clicking sound within six to twelve feet or so.

Obviously the effect would be Invisiblity: Hearing Perception Group,

not within 2".....The question is, I figure that is worth about -1/4.

Does that sound about right ?

Thanks.

Re: Limitation Question: Silent Firearms

You buy a silencer as a Naked Power Advantage (NPA).

This character has a couple of pistol accessories of this nature, including a silencer:

Johnny Tick-Tock

and so does this (very different) character:

Andre

As far as the "slight noise within a few feet" I'd call that SFX and not worth a reduction (real silencers are also audible within a few feet). However, if you were determined to model it, it would just be a -1/4 Lim taken on the NPA itself.

Re: Limitation Question: Silent Firearms

It isn't a 'Silencer'; it's part of how the weapon itself operates. 'Invisible Power F/X (Hearing, Smell)' would probably be what you're going for -- and/or '(Fully Invisible)', source only.

Spring-Driven Spike Rifle: Killing Attack - Ranged 1 1/2d6 (vs. PD), 4 clips of 8 Charges (+0), Invisible Power Effects, Source Only (Fully Invisible; +1/2), Armor Piercing (+1/2) (50 Active Points); OAF (-1), Required Hands Two-Handed (-1/2), STR Min (8; -1/2), Real Weapon (-1/4), Limited Range (Active x 3 Inches; -1/4), Extra Time (Delayed Phase, -1/4): Real Cost 13.

It throws spikes instead of teeny shuriken, so I felt justified in making it Armor Piercing. If it throws tiny shuriken or clusters of little darts, I'd make it Reduced Penetration instead. Also, it's a rifle -- thus 2 hands required, and a certain strength minimum to get the thing up and on target. I also gave it Delayed Phase, just to represent the fact that you have to manually recock the spring. If a little electric motor does it, then take that out ...

Otherwise, unlike a regular rifle whose Power F/X are Sight (the muzzle flash), Hearing (the report), and Smell (cordite), this just goes 'pwing'. "Oh, no, Mr. Garrety's been shot!! Where'd it come from?!? No idea!!"

Thanks for the build.....It looks (at first glance at least) pretty close

to my concept. It is hand wound, so the delayed phase would work,

tho' conceptually you only need to rewind when you change clips

or such-like, depending on if you have been shooting single shot or

hosing around with autofire bursts. That said, since it is variable, I

suppose I'll need to build it as a multipower, with single and burst

slots. I might also modify the STR min to 10 (or 12(?)) and get rid

of the Requires Two Hands, since the concept is for a carbine/SMG

style weapon. And great thinking to add the Invisible: Smell. I'd

compleatly missed the fact that there would be no burned cordite.

 (And I must spread some rep around....)

EDIT: The attached image is close to the conceptual look of the

weapon in question, tho' in use I see a folding stock attached as well.

Re: Limitation Question: Silent Firearms

All right... *thinks*

'It takes a Full Phase for a character to change Clips (unless he has Fast Draw).' Considering you have to both switch the clip AND manually reset the spring, I'd make it 'Extra Time: Extra Phase, Only To Switch Clips (-1/4)'.

Here's a mod:

Spring Sub-Automatic Gun: (Total: 72 Active Cost, 22 Real Cost) Killing Attack - Ranged 1 1/2d6 (vs. PD), Armor Piercing (+1/2), Invisible Power Effects, Source Only (Fully Invisible; +1/2), 4 clips of 32 Charges (+1/2) (62 Active Points); OAF (-1), STR Minimum (10; -1/2), Required Hands One-And-A-Half-Handed (-1/4), Real Weapon (-1/4), Limited Range (Active Points x 3; -1/4), Extra Time (Extra Phase, Only When Changing Clips; -1/4) (Real Cost: 18) plus Naked Modifier, Autofire (5 shots; +1/2) (10 Active Points); OAF (-1), Real Weapon (-1/4) (Real Cost: 4, 1 END)

You know, I couldn't really figure how to technically strip the 1 END off the last, then figured, 'you know what? If you use the burst fire/autofire capability, you're going to have to use some muscle to keep it on target. Frell it -- leave the one bloody END on ...'
