McCoy
According to this month's Discover magazine, there are 188 million used tires in the United States, and burning tires yields 25% more energy than the same mass of coal. Might tire piles be the coal mines of the postapocalyptic future?
Captain Obvious
Re: A resource for PA characters Two days ago I saw a vehicle that would haul those tires. You want to get out of here? Talk to me.
Badger
Re: A resource for PA characters I dont know. But, they tried to get a tire burning plant in my area. But, it was opposed because supposedly in other area it wrecked some serious havoc with the enviroment, particularly with acid rain or something. Not sure, though. Captain Obvious
Re: A resource for PA characters Aren't there ways of filtering out the things that cause acid rain? It's seemed to me for a long time that there needs to be some way of getting rid of tire piles, and burning them for energy seems like a perfect way. Lost opportunity... Opal
Re: A resource for PA characters I recall at least one post /post/ apocalypse story in which the profession 'miner' did refer to people who made thier living digging up landfills, graveyards, burried cities and the like looking for good stuff. The creepy part was that perfectly preserved corpses in crystaline coffins ended up in the tailings pile...

Yep, sulpher scrubbers in the smokestacks. IIRC all new coal plants have to have them (in the US anyway).
Captain Obvious
Re: A resource for PA characters I was just about to start a new thread for this, but this one looks like it'll do. A little story, looks like it's from the Depression era, about making gasoline. This page has a breakdown of petroleum products as a proportion of crude oil. And for good measure, if you're in Coal Country during the Apocalypse and need a tank of fuel for your V8 Interceptor, here's a way to get it.
