Horror Hero Resources

Greetings Herophiles, I realized that I hav been avoiding this one for some time. I have never liked role playing the Horror Genre, but I did not mind the occassional visits. When it comes to topics I dislike I tend to avoid them. Anyway I needed a project to distract me from another one (Tiger Squad). A way to relax and recharge. So here it is. The one you have been waiting for Horror Hero Resources.

Re: Horror Hero Resources

Very Nice,

Additions off the top of my head

I'm not sure what your criteria are for including publishers but if you didn't have them, Chill was Pacesetter and Mayfair depending on edition (I think someone else has the rights now)

Nightbane was Palladium

Over the Edge and Unknown Armies are Atlas Games

For additions there's "Colonial Gothic" from Rogue Games, "Don't Look Back" from Mind Ventures (I think), GURPS Horror from Steve Jackson Games and I'm pretty sure Web Games did a "Web of Horrors" suppliment (I've got it in a box, in a closet somewhere), plus obviously Ravenloft in its many incarnations.

Re: Horror Hero Resources

What about the Army of Darkness RPG?

That's Eden Studios right? I guess Angel and maybe Conspiracy X qualify as well (Since we're talking Eden).

There's also the Supernatural RPG theoretically 'coming soon' from Margaret Weis Productions

Re: Horror Hero Resources

Chill is the big one that jumps out in my mind; one of the few books I genuinely regret losing in a move. The system was dodgy but the setting was diesel. Great supplements as well.

I ran a Chill game every friday night for 3 years and semi-regulary for about a decade after that. It's still my run home and suck my thumb setting. You know when a campaign you've spent months putting together crumbles after 3 sessions, there's a setting/genre that you run next to get back on the horse. Chicken Soup for a GM's soul :) Unfortunately my current group has less than no interest in Horror of any kind

Re: Horror Hero Resources

Man, my group still hasn't had a real Horror game yet.

We've had splatter before, but that's not horror any more than gore is all that is needed to make a movie scary.

I do think powerlessness - especially in a roleplaying system which rewards players by making them more powerful - is key for portraying horror.

If you can work that into your game, the rest is easy.

Yes, true; that and isolation to exacerbate the feeling of powerlessness.

To me, Horror is the hardest mood to accomplish in RPG's because of the commitment it requires.

That and I wish there was a Horror HERO book.

Re: Horror Hero Resources

Because horror is also such a personal emotion, there is a difficulty in getting players to overcome the disjunction of playing a game, being a character and themselves.

There is a huge leap in GMing skill between players saying "my character is horrified" and the player being horrified on behalf of their character.

That's how I see it too. I guess that one thing that annoys me is when one of them says they are going to run a horror game and it just becomes splatterpunk.

Re: Horror Hero Resources

Horror doesn't even need any violence in it at all to be horror.

Although usually this is thought of as a subgenre of "psychological horror".

Theoretically, in the Hero system, whenever a character makes a check against some of the major disads they have, and fail - they should feel horror.
