Real Locations that should be fantasy

Re: Real Locations that should be fantasy

Thanks to John Desmarais for finding this and posting it to the Pulp HERO forum' date=' but IMO it works just as well here: Portal to mythical Mayan underworld found in Mexico.

I've been reading up on this as well but from the Delta Green List. It'll make its way onto the list. I still have a number of entries to catch up on.

Re: Real Locations that should be fantasy

How about this' date=' Mont Saint-Michel, located on a tidal island on the Normandy coast of France. I hate relying on Wikipedia for information but here it is.

Wiki is no problem, we are talking about inspiration for fantasy games.

I don't think anyone's mentioned the Catacombs of Paris yet. Strange.

Anyhoo, here they are. http://www.catacombes-de-paris.fr/english.htm

And here. http://www.triggur.org/cata/

And plans and such here. http://www.catacombs.explographies.com/

Thanks, the links will come in handy.

The Spectacular Sea of Salt: Salar De Uyuni

The world’s largest salt flats, Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia, is an unearthly place that has to be seen to be believed. Join us on a trip to one of the strangest areas the third rock from the sun has to offer.

Have you ever wanted to visit another planet but don’t quite have the wallet power (or for that matter the decades it may take for commercial space flight to Mars to become available)? If you want and out of this world experience you could try, as an alternative, Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia. It is one of the landscapes on planet Earth where you may feel that you are somewhere else in the universe entirely.

Re: Real Locations that should be fantasy

I've got a couple I've used in previous games. They are most in the context of their geography.

Civita di Bagnoregio is on a hill overlooking the road to Rome and Hohenwerfen commands two major valleys in the alps.

This page has a panorama view of Hohenwerfen

Also, there's a place in Death Valley where rocks slide around.

Maybe not as titanic as some of the other links, but still: A place that almost feels like an Elven Realm when you are there...

Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe

More pictures at German-language Wikipedia

Only to show the main attraction, the Octogon with the Hercules statue (which is 8 meters (25 feet) tall) and the Cascades:

Re: Real Locations that should be fantasy

Cool! BTW, There was a whole TV Series called "Cities of the Underworld" or something, it had lots of great stuff like this from cities around the world. The torrents were available before and might still be...

Re: Real Locations that should be fantasy

I've proposed doing a column at RPGnet on these places and I am in the midst of writing the second half of the first one. Comments and suggestions would be appreciated...

The Preispodnyaya

I've been researching undergrounds lately for a writing project. I seriously need to google up some more images of this!

That series is on the History channel, Cities of the Underworld: http://www.history.com/cities-of-the-underworld

Cool stuff there.

Yeah, the stuff I am doing is more of a history + gaming slant. That doesn't take any cool factor from the show. I did not see any Moscow episodes after taking a gander. I am need to look at a few of them when I hit other locations.

Some of them are awesome just watch for computer viruses! I hit one nasty Russian site a few days ago -- unrelated to this search but still. There are 2-4 sites that are basically nothing but pictures if you Google "Moscow Underground" plus a mind-blowing site about their subway stations which are much more magnificent than ours.

I posted part II of the Moscow piece and will be moving on to the next location tonight. I'll shoot for one location every week.

Very very cool. The living bridges were amazing. Make sure you follow the link to the Hobbit House at the end of the article (http://www.darkroastedblend.com/2007/10/environmentally-friendly-houses.html).

Good find. Repped.
