Q: How do you know Disney lost the rights to Pinocchio?

 

For the record, the Italian novel Pinocchio on which Disney based the first truly great animated feature is in the public domain, having been written nearly two hundred years ago. That is why you could see him in the Shrek movies and why Roberto Bagniani could play him in a live-action film.

 

It is one of Italy's most beloved literary works, which is why the live-action film was a huge success in Italy yet landed with a decided thud in America (which is also much less familiar with the commedia-del-arte tradition which Bagniani exemplifies).
