yamamura
Being a fan of the Ring (bet you couldn't tell), I like hearing about Japanese urban legends. Underneath the mask her face is split ear to ear. Quote:Watashi kirei ne? (Am I beautiful?) Background: In most versions I have found, she had went in (either by her own or encouraged by her husband) to get plastic surgery done. Unfortunely the doctor goof, splitting her mouth nearly from ear to ear. This drove the former beauty off the deep end. Now she lurks near power/telephone poles around dusk awaiting children. When she finds one, she ask them if she is beautiful? If they answer yes, she pulls down the mask and asks again. The child will take off running and she will catch them and say "I want do for you what was done to my face." Then she will use her sickle to split the child's mouth ear to ear (and by all indication kills the child too). If the child says no right from the start she will still chase them and still perform her grisly task. Now it gets tricky if the child answers yes the second time. Some say it will lay her to rest (if she is supernatural), while other say she still will go after the child. I have even hit one version saying the only way to protect yourself is to say it is so-so. There are also version where she is the wife of a samurai who noticed her wandering eye. In his rage he split her face so that none would fine her beautiful. Now her ghost haunts roadways in vengence for what was done to her. This was very strange given the fact he had went to an all boy school. The girl smiled at him and he smiled back. Then the girl lept out of the window. At this point he boy could see that she was missing the lower half of her body and that she couldn't be human. Some say he then tried to run, while other say he was frozen to the spot. But whatever is true she began running on her elbows making a teke-teke sound. When she caught up to the boy she took out a scythe and cut him into two making him into one of her own. In this case a young woman going to bathroom by herself will hear a male voice coming from a stall. It will ask her if she wants either a Red Mantle or a Blue. If she answers Red it will come out and cut up her back thus making it look like a grisly mantle. If she answers Blue the creature will use its rope to strangle her. I have not found what would happen if she said neither but given this creature’s thirst for blood, it probably wouldn’t help. Design Notes: I basically used the Slasher from the Bestiary (Thanks Steve for such a useful book) and add some color and an additional weapon to better fit the story. I also borrowed from older myth the ability to enter into the underworld as an innate ability of this creature and also the fact that tragedy has struck in the particular stall, thus allowing the creature into our world. Both of which and immortality can be drop thus creating a more standard Slasher. A friend of mine suggested making this creature even less human by adding a tail that could strangle and the tip of the tail having knife like structure on the tail’s end. yamamura
Came up with this idea for a phyiscal disadvantage for a horror campaign. Just want to bounce it off ya..... Affected by the Spirit World Ghost and other mystically insubstantial beings can affect you to some degree. This disadvantage fits best psychic characters attuned to the spirit world but can be used by others. Somewhat Affected (Frequently, Slightly): The touch of a ghost can slow you down and cause delay actions; -1 to all Agility related rolls and skills. 10pts Affected (Frequently, Greatly): Any attack by a spirit creature that doesn't Affect Physical World, does half damage to person with this disadvantage. Also the ghost gets half it's strength to grab and hold the character. 15pts Greatly Affected (Frequently, Fully): The Ghost's attack and strength are at full in regard to this character. 20pts This assumes camapign where things other then ghost (such as werewolves and vampires) exists. In a strictly ghost campaign, frequently can be moved up to all the time. Also I am not so sure of the penalty on the lower version of this one. OddHat
The disads look reasonable for a ghost heavy game. If a PC wanted to be able to spot invisible ghosts and/or fight back I'd require the appropriate powers.
yamamura
Hanako of the Toilet is a Japanese toilet ghost that has been scaring school children for a number of years. Versions of her have appeared in a number of animes for example; Dirty Pair Flash and Haunted Junction. In Dirty Pair Flash she is a hologram of a dead girl with a baby emulating from one of the stall. She so frightens Kei that she started shooting at everything. By the end of the episode, the hologram is stuck in the on position and when one girl says that they can’t be rid of her, Hanako smiles a wicked smile. While in Haunted Junction, she one of many ghost that haunt the school. There have also been books and movies centering on her and other ghost of Japanese Urban Legends. Her legend varies from region to region and school to school. Believed to be the evolution of a toilet kami, Hanako can be very helpful (some stories say she will hand a girl toilet paper from the toilet if the girl uses her stall). Some stories even say she will help protect her summoner from other ghosts. She can be mischievous though. This varies from knocking on the stall and hearing her answer but opening it up to find no one there to dousing the girl using her stall with blood (this has led some to believe that there is connection with the menstrual cycle and the legend). Then there is the darker side of her, a demoness that will grab any body who dares to summon her and drag them down to the pit of hell or maybe just kill them. The basic story is that of a young girl who died in the toilet. Some say it was during a bombing raid during the war while others say that she committed suicide and thus haunt the toilet and yet other says she met some other untimely end there. To summon her, you must go to the stall in which she died in (or is associated with her) and knock on it and call her name. She will then appear and depending on what legend you hear, help or hurt you (at very least played a trick on you). As an option you can even have it be a boy’s bathroom that she haunts. After all schools get rebuilt and remodeled and what was once an all girl school, can become a coed or all boy school. This can take on a double reason why she haunts if a boy is what she committed suicide over. Below I have included a write up of Hanako using the Ghost from Hero Bestiary as a starting point. I went with her being a nasty creature, but with a little tailoring and adjustment of the points she can be made to fit any of the legends that surround her.
