Michael Hopcroft
Burger King Says It Wants to 'Offend' Customers With New Menu Item And that's different than everything they already sell because...? The fact that "chicken fries" are such a hot item should be alarming to those who do still care about food. They are to protein what Funyuns are to the vegetable kingdom. Logan D. Hurricanes
Lay's has the new "Do Us a Flavor" final four chips out. They are: Southern Biscuits and Gravy, Greektown Gyro, New York Reuben, and West Coast Truffle Fries. Two days ago I tried the Gyro and the Truffle Fries. I had high hopes for the gyro because I love a good gyro. They were almost inedible. Even the smell was awful. Just disgusting. The truffle fries were very good, though. I didn't know what to expect since I never had truffle fries before (I doubt I would pay truffle prices for fries). The chips are quite tasty and I even bought a full sized bag last night when I went shopping. As much as I love actual biscuits & gravy (I am a southern boy after all) I am not anxious to try that flavor chip. I don't see myself eating the Reuben either, but you never know. Cygnia
Yeah, these flavors are just...ugh. Truffle oil is, from what I've heard & read, a rip-off. You have to be REALLY careful in determining if actual truffles are being used. Even if it's the real stuff, you can't be heavy-handed with it. Logan D. Hurricanes
Since the chips aren't $50 a bag, I'm guessing they're not the real thing
Haerandir
The gyro chips are not great. I could taste the individual flavors they were going for, but the balance was off. The onion flavor was a little too strong and chemical-y. The reuben chips are better, but I was so-so on them. The first few were pretty good, but the sauerkraut flavor leaves a strong-ish aftertaste that I tired of quickly. I can't imagine bothering with the truffle fries flavor. As Log points out, they're clearly not made using real truffle oil, so basically, they're 'potatoes fried in vegetable oil'-flavored. AKA regular potato chips. I did listen to a food podcast try all four flavors, and while they liked the truffle chips, they were similarly dubious about their alleged 'special-flavorness'. I actually quite liked the biscuits 'n' gravy flavor. Though they probably should have been called 'spicy sausage' flavored, as they're pretty one-note.
