September 14, 2024Sep 14 comment_2959401 THAT worked.... Supermarket has pre-diced butternut squash. Per pound, sure, it's a lot more, but butternut's a pain to break down. 15 ounces for $4...cool. Put half of that and half of a granny smith apple for contrast, into the air fryer...just tossed with some oil and salt. 14 minutes at 360, stir round, 14 more minutes. (Small air fryer, it started as 2 levels.) Then pureed with almond milk (a fair bit) and about an ounce of cream, a bit more salt, some stevia, cinnamon, and 5 spice (don't have pumpkin pie spice right now). Oh yeah. REALLY nice because it takes so little time/effort, due to the air fryer. And pie pumpkin season's coming up...which I have to break down myself, unfortunately.
September 14, 2024Sep 14 comment_2959445 There's a pumpkin soup recipe in my Portuguese cookbook I want to try when it gets a wee bit cooler here (it's in the damn 80's this weekend!). Not to mention a dumpling recipe w/spinach, mushrooms and squash in another cookbook of mine.
September 14, 2024Sep 14 comment_2959452 You're complaining about the 80s? Forecast high here is 95. And my brother'd laugh at me...actually, he did, last we talked. Phoenix has been 100+ for..... Wait for it... You might want to sit down... 110 straight days. The local paper's mentioning that the high Sunday may only be 96, breaking the streak that started May 26th.
September 18, 2024Sep 18 comment_2959686 Concur--but it's not like they're broccoli. No one is making you eat them.
September 18, 2024Sep 18 comment_2959689 I like broccoli. Usually. Except when mom boils it and stinks up the whole house.
September 18, 2024Sep 18 comment_2959690 On behalf of broccoli, I must object to this invidious comparison. Broccoli is a perfectly acceptable vegetable; I'm quite fond of a simple raw broccoli and tomato 'salad.' Therefore, commingling broccoli with one of the truly obscene culinary abominations...culinary being used rather loosely, I might add...is unacceptable. Heck, even including Peeps in this thread is a gross disservice to the thread...as it implies they are, in some manner, fit for human consumption. EDIT: worst Halloween semi-confection ever...Peeps or candy corn?

Peeps are downright disgusting, candy corn is badly flavored, too sweet wax. I skip the candy for trick or treaters, and give out Hot Wheels cars instead. That way, I can save the extra cars for next year, and I don't spike my blood sugar in leftover candy.

Because you have to commit to the greater evil. I agree with your assessments, tho. I keep my lights off and don't answer the doorbell...if anyone even comes by. I do live in an area with kids, and I do sometimes see them out...but these days, for the most part, if there's no sign, it means "don't bother ringing" enough that many don't.

September 24, 2024Sep 24 comment_2960026 I saw the Coca-Cola Oreo flavored soda in the case at a convenience store on game night last week, and it caused me to reach for the Baja Blast Zero instead. The line from Last Crusade came to mind as I did it: "Choose wisely."

Personally I think the soda wins out over the cookies - to me it has more of the flavor of the Oreo filling - but at the end of the day both are just novelties and not amazing must-have show-stoppers.
