unclevlad Posted November 27, 2024 Report Posted November 27, 2024 Knew I was doing the 2nd duck breast tonight. FINALLY figured out the side...something I don't do often at all. Fried rice, with bacon, mushrooms, and a shallot. Was looking at the rices...not all that closely. Huh...brown jasmine, half a pound...lil pricey, but...OK. DIDN'T realize it's par-cooked rice (!!). Which means I get to be seriously lazy. Cool! And just pulled the pumpkin pie out...along with the leftover pie filling, poured into a veggie dish and cooked, which'll be tonight's dessert.... Quote

unclevlad Posted December 12, 2024 Report Posted December 12, 2024 Absolutely Hires. Keurig Dr. Pepper committed a soft drink atrocity by pulling the plug on Hires when they bought the brand, in favor of A&W, which has already in their stable. Altho, really, the demise of the product dated back a bit further, because it got caught up in corporate football when the family sold it. From Wikipedia: Quote Consolidated Foods bought the company from the Hires family in 1960, and sold it two years later to Crush International. Procter & Gamble bought Crush in 1980, and sold it to Cadbury Schweppes in 1989. Cadbury divested its soft drinks arm in 2008, and the beverage company renamed itself Dr Pepper Snapple Group. And Dr Pepper Snapple was bought by Keurig. Given that history, it's no surprise that Hires lost all corporate backing. My take's always been that A&W was the lazy choice...and they weren't going to spin off a competitor, so they just killed the product. The video notes Virgil's and Bundaberg. Been a long time since I tried em...SCARY high blood sugar tends to change one's habits in a hurry...but they were both pretty good, altho the Virgil's is seriously expensive too. Quote

Ternaugh Posted December 12, 2024 Report Posted December 12, 2024 Apparently, Hires syrup extract is still made for soda fountain use. Locally, Smith's is showing it as available. I might pick some up for experiments. Quote

I'm seeing a Hires Big H root beer extract, but it's not the same company...which really makes me wonder why Keurig hasn't sued them into oblivion, or at least a name change. This stuff is made by a drive-in in Utah. I did see a web site saying Keurig still made the syrup, but only one. And looking at Keurig's page...they've got 3 root beers, A&W, IBC, and Stewart's. No mention of Hires in any way. Granted, this is the marketing site, not the B2B site, but if it's only on the B2B site, well, there's likely minimum order sizes The site also notes Stewart's as a Fountain option, so the web site noting the Hires syrup may have simply misread things.
