Twisted Cross, Silver Bullets

"We've got a stake in this advance too!"

I've been thinking about this campaign for my FTF group, partly as filler for when we're short 1-3 folks. Take Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Mummy (modern version),the opening sequences of Hellboy and Bulletproof Monk, mix with the WWII movies like Where Eagles Dare, Dirty Dozen, and Guns of Navarone. World War II monster hunters! Working for a special subsection of British Intelligence (with later assistance from the OSS), the agents of MI-13 deal with the more unusual of the threats from the Axis.

The idea is to progress through the war in jumps, doing largely episodic adventures. Don't need everyone for every adventure, and players are free to switch out characters between adventures if want to try a different type out (or if one gets killed, whether it be by Ratzi bullets or more supernatural means).

The basic ideas for the scenarios (listed here in no particular order, though I have timelines in mind) are mostly taking classic monster types especially from the early Universal pics and putting them in Nazi hands.

* Werewolf, sent to kill Churchill while he's at Blenheim. (one of the earlier scenarios most likely)

* Zombie troopers (likely in the last days of the war)

* Invisible Man assassin/spy - can you stop him before he uncovers the plans for the Allied assault on Europe?

*Mummies (while DAK is pushing into Egypt)

*Frankenstein's Monster

*Jekyll/Hyde super-soldiers

*Ghostly pirate ship raiding Allied convoys.

*Psychic coven directing Axis attacks on Allied shipping in the Aegean (The Nuns of Navarone)

*Vampire aiding Axis regime in Rumania.

*Part of the final mission will also include rescuing their informant and capturing or killing the final batch of German researchers to keep them out of Soviet hands.

Characters should likely fit into one of several roles:

*The Occultist: Knowledge about the various weird stuff, likely some psychic abilities. British academic type, Gypsy fortuneteller, etc.

*The Soldier: Able to use most weapons, good with guns & grenades. When you need the room cleared, send him in.

*The Fighter: not as good a shot as the Soldier, but likely stronger and tougher. Boxer, knife fighter, brute.

*The Outdoorsman: Tracking, stealthy. Likely a good shot with a rifle but would need to leave the SMGs and such to the Soldier, and not as comfortable with opponents that are shooting back. Cowboy, hunter, explorer types.

*The Expert: When you need something fixed, figured out or broken, he's the one you turn to. Likely skilled with mechanics, demolitions, radio work and the like.

Re: Twisted Cross, Silver Bullets

In the hell that is Stalingrad where the killed outnumber the wounded, a Nazi scientist uses discoveries made by teh Thule Society to replace soldiers damaged limbs quickly, by using those of the dead, with no rejection. This eventually leads to both the Frankenstien Monster and Nazi Zombies. Hmm, yeah...

The Siege of Monte Cassino. How did the Germans manage to hold out so long? The same techniques as were used in Stalingrad...

Yes, there's some ideas there. Have some rep.

Re: Twisted Cross, Silver Bullets

An interesting idea with lots of possibilities.

An amusing twist on the Invisible Man would be to have two of them and have the players rubbing their heads as to how just one man can be running rings around them so easily, even if he is invisible. Of course when they catch the first one they should work out what's going on.

Other scenarios that spring to mind.

Team must aid a Gypsy who is gathering artefacts/ingredients for a curse to use on Hitler.

In various nasty war zones e.g. Stalingrad, Ghouls have left their dark hiding places and now hunt the living and the dead openly across the wartorn landscape.

The Thule Society has developed a time machine and is attempting to send modern soldiers back in time to change the course of the First World War. These agents must be chased down and destroyed even if it means hunting them through the trenches and out into no man's land.

The Germans have managed to find a sleeping dragon which is a descendant/relative of the creature which was slain by Saint George. If they can wake the beast they may be able to convince it to take revenge on the Saint's adopted people and swing the Battle of Britain in the wrong direction. This one could end with a curious duel of Spitfire versus dragon; of course if the dragon manages to stay awake long enough to regain its full power then the plane is toast.

The Japanese are growing desperate to win their war against the Americans and have hired a Kitsune to create an elite team of Yokai, Oni and other creatures of myth. These dangerous beings must be neutralised before they spread terror throughout the Allied ranks.

A mission to find the hidden island of the Sirens and steal a magical horn from them. The horn can summon a mighty Kraken which would be of great use in destroying German U-Boats.

The Nazis have created an army of Golems to protect Berlin against the final assualt. Only a daring raid into occupied territory to free a group of Jewish refugees, one of whom is a Rabbi with knowledge of such matters, will gain the Allies the information they need to destroy the soulless creatures. I will admit though that this mission could lead the game into rather touchy and controversial territory. The Holocaust is probably not a good backdrop for a game however satisfying it would be to imagine oneself saving some of its victims.

A real Ghost In The Machine e.g. a haunted tank or plane being used against the Allies to terrible effect.

Ghost in the machine tank.... I think that's my favorite. Love it!

Yeah. For too long, haunted tanks have been strictly an Allied monopoly!:P

Probably later in the war, have a previously knocked-out Panther or Tiger begin stalking behind the lines in France...comes out of the fog, blows some stuff up, slinks back into the fog again. Much quieter than a regular tank since it doesn't need an engine, but still squeaky. Gets hit a number of times but keeps on going - no crew to kill, no fuel to burn, etc. Either will need to be completely blown apart or somehow exorcised. Either the ghosts of the tank crew, or maybe the ghost of an ACTUAL panther or tiger that got killed by a bomb, etc. Will have to check on the status of the Paris zoo at that time...

Yeah, I would probably not have them get directly involved. If I do, I wouldn't have it have any special mystical connection like using the deaths to summon Hel or anything like that - though the PCs might suspect some big ritual purpose, I think it's much more horrifying to realize that the Nazis are doing it as an end in itself.:sick::mad: Show that despite all the supernatural terrors they've faced, the most frightening monsters can be their fellow man. :(

Alternatively, could go for the 'Scooby Doo' approach here - at that stage the PCs may well take it for granted that this is a genuine supernatural occurrance, and this could make for a good change of pace (as well as freaking them out when, at the first encounter, all their "standard" anti-ghost stuff is totally ineffective). Have Nazi commandos on an extended campaign of sabotage and general terror behind Allied lines, using clever fakery to both demoralize the enemy and cover their own tracks.

If nothing else, at scenario's end you could go for using a line like "... Und ve vould haff gotten avay vith it too, iff not for you interfering schweinhunde!" Or something like that.

Re: Twisted Cross, Silver Bullets

If you can locate them, Pinnacle games made a small series of Weird War II books that were pretty neat, as well as SJ Games Weird War II book for GURPS. In addition, and probably a bit harder to find, are the Weird War Tales comics. Great twists and oddities that could be mined for campaigns. There are some examples in this comic gallery.

Some phrases just keep going, going, going. Try that phrase in bad Italian accent, complete with hand gestures, and it looses something.

Hmmm, And where were the Vatican's elite anti-forces of evil hit squads when all this was going on? Come on, you've got some decent threads, gotta have warrior monks, Ninja clerics and possibly Archmage Bishops in here.

Hawt ninja nuns. That could be interesting.

Re: Twisted Cross, Silver Bullets

Vatican Sturm Jesuits? to quote the euro sourcebook for the ICE cyberpunk variant.

considering the fact that Ian Fleming and Alistair Crowley both worked for briitish Inteligence before the war, and during and after probably. theres all kinds of scary things you could do with that

1. Crowley owned a manor house on the shore of Loch Ness, that was later owned by Jimm Page of Led Zeppelin, it still exists but in private ownership now.

http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Parthenon/7069/bole-2.html

maybe the Loch Ness monster was some sort of experimental submarine?

2. couple of books by James Rollins talk about assorted nazi and russian experiments into various grim things, Black Order and The Last Oracle.

good books, fiction but at least partially grounded in fact, and he lists

his reference sources where he can.

thanks for your great ideas

Re: Twisted Cross, Silver Bullets

it could be worse, Ed Wood or Uwe Boll could have gotten their start in the thirties.

although there were plenty of things with Peter Lorre in them, gotta wonder if he been alive, would they have used his voice for Gollum?

for that matter, the first batman movie was made in 46?

hmm... what about pre-war pirate films?

Captain Blood or the Sea Hawk?

Re: Twisted Cross, Silver Bullets

heres another that comes to mind;

Dr Cyclops[1940] a mad scientist in the Peruvian jungle is conducting experiments into reducing humans to 1/5th normal size.

just an oddball sidenote:

Victor Fleming directed 3 vastly different films in 3 years, Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, and the Spencer Tracey version of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

also the first movie or serial captain america and batman came out during the war

AND 'Batwinged Bimbos From Hell', the third book. Great stuff.

I particularly liked the funky Character sheets - and the Cardboard Heroes-style figures. Have thought of photocopying the latter to put with my other Cardboard Heroes (substantial collection), but that has always seemed kinda .... wrong.

They're by Katherine Kurtz & her husband Scot MacMillian. supposedly there was going to be at least another q but nothing ever came of that as far as I know.

For reading about weird things & teh War, try Trevor von Hawkwood's "The Spear Of DestinY". I used it as the basis for a CoC scenario in which thePCs discovered that the reaosn for the gas chambers in the camps was really for mass blood sacrifices to attempt to release teh Old Ones from their captivity. However, as somebody has already pointed out, let your players come to the understanding that the true horror of the war is humanity's capability for tru evil & depravity. Hope this helps.

Trevor von Hawkwood ? Sure you don't mean Trevor Ravenscroft ?
