Lord Liaden
Having had cause recently to direct a fellow Hero forumite to various HERO fantasy adventures, it occured to me that other members of our community might appreciate having access to quality ready-made adventures usable in most fantasy game settings. There are plenty of times when a GM doesn't have time to whip up an adventure, especially with character stats and maps; or is looking for a good basic adventure to introduce a gaming group to fantasy or to HERO. Money often being a factor, it helps if they're inexpensive. There are in fact a number of such adventures available, inexpensive or even free; but many prospective GMs probably aren't aware of them or of where to find them. So I thought posting directions to them here would be helpful. On an earlier software version of the Hero Games website, the "Free Stuff" section included a nice little generic adventure for Fifth Edition Fantasy HERO, The Tomb of Rakoss the Undying by Bob Pennington. It's a classic dungeon crawl, and makes a fine introductory adventure, especially for new players. The files include a ten-page PDF detailing the adventure, a good color map in JPEG, and Hero Designer files for the three "monsters" used in it. A pretty neat package for a freebie. This website no longer hosts those files, but you can still download them as a ZIP file from this archived webpage. On his excellent website of diverse free HERO resources, Fantasy HERO Treasure Trove, Robert J. Hall has crafted three well-designed adventures, easily usable in most fantasy settings, with full character stats and detailed maps in HTML. Although written for Fourth Edition HERO, they'd work readily with Fifth Edition: The Children of Synzhen Wrath of the Fire Beast Secret of Saltham Shore Getting into the "cheap" part of this post , Hero Games's PDF magazine, Digital Hero, published a number of adventures for several genres as part of various issues, including three for fantasy: YOUR HOROSCOPE FOR: VIRGO: Your Fantasy Hero party must save a maiden from the belly of a terrible wyrm! At least, that might be the quest…. DH 14, PAGE 23 LEFTOVER HERO: This secret map contains the location of a colony of brain-eating Migdalars, that didn’t fit into Fantasy Hero Battlegrounds. DH 21, PAGE 42 THE TREASURE OF THENIN: The journal of Thenin Bookwright holds the secret of a buried treasure, one that is guarded by a most unusual demon… DH 43, PAGE 48 You can purchase and download DH for $5.00 US for each 64-page issue -- or $30.00 for 10 issues -- from here. Finally, I recommend Chasing A Golden Buck, a licensed PDF adventure for Hero's Valdorian Age setting, but easily transplantable, and a mere $3.50. You can read more about and purchase it from this page in the Hero Games online store.

Lord Liaden
Re: Free/Cheap Fantasy HERO Adventures It would only be fair to also mention Hero Games's adventure compendium, Fantasy HERO Battlegrounds. It's not as cheap as the other items here, and it doesn't include stats for all the creatures used in the book, instead referring parties to the HERO System Bestiary and Monsters, Minions, And Marauders. OTOH it contains three full adventures and eight other adventure locations, with lots of maps for reuse potential, and you can get it in PDF or hardcopy from Hero's online store.
