I hesitate to go East Asian, simply because that seems to be the first place American pop culture goes for "this weapon says I'm a bad man" any more. Although that's mainly the katana. I just have to be careful about it, evidently the whole intelligent sword thing has been done before. (When I first came up with the character years ago, I hadn't even heard of Elric, let alone read the books. Then someone said "your white-haired, red-eyed, ashed-skinned protagonist is just an Elric ripoff." **sigh**) That's the hardest part of coming up with anything original nowadays. Even if you've never heard of something that sounds like what you're trying to do, there is so much fantasy/sci-fi fiction out there that it's likely that someone else has already done what you're thinking of.
